Dates are meant to be special, to build a connection and spark chemistry. However, some dates can be scary too. A similar incident occurred when a woman was taken aback after a man she had met only twice made an odd request involving money. Feeling confused and suspicious, she decided to seek public opinion. The woman, @Lostmycats, shared her story on the community forum Mumsnet, explaining that the man she had been on two dates with asked her to lend him around $40. In her post, which received over 145 replies, she shared that he claimed he was short of funds and needed the money to fix his boiler.

In the post, she asked, “After a second date? Is there ever a genuine reason for a man to ask to borrow money from you when you’ve only met twice?” In a follow-up comment, she added that the man had shared that he couldn't ask for money from his parents because they were in a hospital appointment. She found his request suspicious because he lived on a rental property where tenants usually don't need to pay for the repairs, she said.

As soon as she shared the incident online, the comments section flooded with warnings, asking her to never see that man again, suggesting he is a scammer. "No. The best case is he's a financially incompetent loser. Worst case is he's testing your boundaries with a small request to see if you're a candidate for a bigger scam or outright abuse," commented @almostwelsh. "Money for what? How much?" asked @zipadeedodah. She further added, "No one ever asked me, but I'd think they were a loser if they did."  Some even called him a freeloader, or he may never see her again after taking the money from her.

@mammyloveswine, sharing her experience, wrote, "I’m recently dating a man who has just been made redundant, went out last night for his birthday, and he still insisted on paying, wouldn’t let me get the bill, he even said he would understand if I didn’t want to date him anymore! I told him not to be daft, and tough times happen to everyone! Asking to borrow money so soon is a huge red flag!"

Red flags can show up in the most unexpected places when people first start dating. However, one woman, who had just started seeing an attractive man, got lucky when she ran his name on Google to show his picture to her her friend. Her stomach dropped when the search results appeared with a newspaper article accusing the man of allegedly mistreating animals. This is why, daters are encouraged to be wary of individuals they meet in the dating world, especially online, unless they earn your trust.
