People are more receptive to choice than pressure. TikTok user Zakiya shared how her boyfriend’s musician cousin repeatedly forced her to sing during a family gathering, leaving her feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. When the two crossed paths again at a wedding sometime later, Zakiya finally got the opportunity to address the awkward encounter. In a video shared under the handle @_slay_z_ on May 2, 2026, she explained that her boyfriend came from a family that regularly held music-filled gatherings. During one of those evenings, an older cousin kept insisting that she join the family karaoke session, even though she had no interest in performing in front of a room full of relatives.

Zakiya felt the cousin did not warm to her from the beginning and became especially determined to get her on stage during the karaoke portion of the night. Despite repeatedly declining, she said the cousin continued pushing the idea and pointed to other people who had done the same when they first joined the family. Zakiya firmly responded, “I can’t sing,” but that did little to stop the encouragement. Sometime later, when the two met again at a wedding, Zakiya saw a chance to finally address the uncomfortable encounter that had stayed with her. She approached the cousin privately and decided to ask directly if there was any issue between them.

As the conversation unfolded, Zakiya brought up the family gathering and explained why the experience had bothered her. She told the cousin, “You seemed really pushy, and I just want to make sure we are cool.” The cousin initially appeared confused before realizing what she was referring to. She then explained that there had never been a personal problem and that karaoke nights were simply a long-standing family tradition. Addressing concerns directly can prevent misunderstandings from growing over time. According to Zakiya, the cousin said newcomers were often encouraged to participate and insisted that she had not intended to single her out.

After that discussion, the tension disappeared. Zakiya said she never had another issue with the cousin, and their interactions remained friendly. She also revealed that she stayed in the relationship for another two years after the incident. Open communication often provides answers that assumptions cannot. Looking back, she felt the experience taught her the importance of speaking up when something feels wrong instead of quietly carrying those feelings forward.

While some people deal with toxic in-laws, another woman was grateful for the opposite. In another incident, a woman shared how a small moment made her feel valued by her partner’s family. She had taken her engagement ring for repair after losing a stone and asked her mother-in-law for advice, saying, “I called my mother-in-law,” to find a trusted jeweler. Later, she expected to pay the bill, but learned it was already taken care of by her mother-in-law, which surprised her. She also wrote, “Not only did she and my FIL raise the man of my dreams, but they show up for us over and over again,” expressing her gratitude for the steady and thoughtful support they often give.
