Homeless man refused the almond croissant she bought for him — his unexpected reason led her to a heartbreaking sight nearby
Sometimes a small act of kindness can lead to a heartbreaking truth you never saw coming. TikTok creator Lilly, known as @lilly._.bugz, was at a coffee shop with a friend when she noticed a couple of homeless people across the street and decided to bring them some pastries. But when she offered an almond croissant to the first man, his unexpected response left her stunned. She posted about the encounter on September 11, 2026, and what she said broke viewers' hearts.
Lilly explained that she bought a couple of pastries and crossed the street to offer them to the first homeless man she saw. But when she offered him an almond croissant, he refused the food and said, "I’m okay. He needs it more than me," pointing toward another man on a bench. Lilly walked over and was stunned to see the man eating a dead pigeon, with feathers and bones scattered around him. He accepted the croissants, but when Lilly offered the first man a Pop-Tart, he refused again and asked her to give it to the other man. She asked one more time if there was anything she could get him, and he replied, "I’ve had enough to eat," before pointing to the pigeon and adding, "He's eating a dead pigeon that he found off the ground, miss."'
Lilly said she didn't know what to say after hearing that. The man told her, "I’ll talk to you later, miss," leaving Lilly completely speechless. She expected to offer a little kindness to the person in need, but what she saw left her visibly shaken. What she experienced also shows how serious food insecurity can be for people experiencing homelessness. A 2026 meta-analysis of 40 U.S. studies found that an estimated 57% of people experiencing housing insecurity or homelessness were food insecure, a rate more than four times higher than in the general U.S. population. The researchers also found that social and institutional support was linked to lower odds of food insecurity.
The video quickly caught people's attention, with many viewers saying the situation was heartbreaking. Some were especially concerned about the man who was eating the pigeon and wondered whether anyone had contacted local authorities or services that could help him. In the comments, @f0urfree wrote, "absolutely no human should have to experience this." @ruylershouse asked, "Did you call the authorities????" And @bigza9k6 wanted to know where the incident happened, writing, "Where was this at because I work downtown so I can stop by pretty often."
