Solo runner became suspicious just 40 seconds after greeting a stranger — what she saw when she looked back was terrifying
People cross paths with strangers every day, but not every encounter is as innocent as it seems. A physical therapist, Dr. Libby Schwartz, shared in a recent social media post how her routine solo run suddenly turned into a frightening experience after she briefly acknowledged a stranger on her path. She casually continued her run, having no reason to think anything was wrong at first. Moments later, she instinctively looked behind her and realized she was in a dangerous situation. She posted the incident under her Instagram handle, @movementmantra.pt, on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
40 seconds after she came across the man, she looked over her shoulder only to find him running behind her. Dr. Schwartz shared that she had only given a simple nod to the man before continuing on her way. She had never experienced any problems running alone before, but the incident made her reflect on women's safety and the challenges many face simply for existing. When she realized he was chasing her, she chose to confront the stranger and shouted at him, "Why are you running after me?" He simply made the excuse that he was not following her at all.
She still stood her ground and repeatedly told him, "Get back!" making sure the man eventually turned around and walked away in the opposite direction. That made her feel even more certain that he was not there to exercise. Trusting one's gut feeling during such situations can be just as important as taking safety precautions. Dr. Schwartz emphasized that had she not turned around, she might not have noticed the man. She was also thankful for her earphones, which allowed her to listen to music while still hearing the sounds around her and staying alert. She advised others, "Don’t completely block out the world with your headphones."
After the encounter, Dr. Schwartz shared how the experience had shaken her. She urged everyone, especially women, to always be aware of their surroundings. Calling it a "scary" experience, she encouraged others to carry safety items such as pepper spray or a whistle, and to keep their phones within easy reach in case they need immediate help. She also added in the caption, "Stay alert. It only takes one moment for an ordinary run to become something else."
Women's safety has long been a global issue, and many incidents highlight that reality. In another case, a woman realized a stranger was following her home, so she immediately stepped into a store for safety. The man, however, refused to leave and even entered the store shouting disturbing comments at her. She later believed he had left the area, but her instincts told her he was still lurking nearby. When the staff finally noticed the man was gone, they informed her, but she was still too frightened to continue home alone. At that moment, another woman shopping in the store stepped in and offered to accompany her. The woman said that the gesture instantly restored her "faith in humanity."
