Husband of just a year joined wife at hospital after doctors dismissed her unusual symptoms for 20 years as ‘fat’ — their response to him stunned her

She had been raising the same concerns for years, but doctors kept dismissing them and giving different explanations instead of real answers.

Getting doctors to take your symptoms seriously can be frustrating, especially when you keep hearing the same explanation instead of getting real answers. One digital creator, who goes by @lifeaccordingtokp on Instagram, shared in a video on July 11, 2026, that she spent years being told her health problems were because she was overweight, tired, or simply a busy mom. But one appointment with her husband changed the way the doctor responded, which left her completely stunned.

The creator explained in her video that her symptoms had been going on for years, including "crazy ringing" in her ears, vision problems, falling down, and even suddenly losing consciousness at times. When she repeatedly raised her concerns during physicals and annual checkups, they kept "gaslighting" her into believing that the problem was with her. She finally told her now-husband, who offered to join her at an appointment. When the doctor made another dismissive comment, her husband spoke up, and that's when things changed. The doctor asked, "Really? Well, what’s been going on?" That led to blood work, an MRI, a diagnosis, and a treatment plan—answers she had been seeking for years.

The experience was frustrating because she had been raising the same concerns for years, but doctors kept dismissing them and giving different explanations instead of real answers. She said her husband would often hear her come home upset from appointments and tell her that what she was describing did not sound normal. At first, she was not sure how much his presence would help, especially since he had only been in her life for about a year. But once he spoke up during the appointment, the doctor finally started taking her concerns seriously.

The creator said the difference was what stunned her most. Her husband had only been around for about a year and did not know everything she had experienced, yet once he explained what he had seen, the doctor immediately took a closer look. She said it made her realize how differently her concerns were treated simply because a man had spoken up in the room.

Bias in health care is unfortunately not rare. A survey found that 93% of women aged 25 to 34 felt dismissed when seeking medical care, while more than 40% had to see multiple providers for a diagnosis. A 2019 study found that 17% of women felt they were treated differently because of their gender. Research suggests these concerns are valid, as women may receive less evidence-based care than men with the same condition.

Many people related to her experience in the comments section as well. @evaskinandsoul wrote, "Every single woman has this experience. Every one of us." @myintegrativetherapist mentioned, "It still makes my blood boil every time a doctor looks at my husband to confirm what I’m saying is true." Meanwhile, @jo.lynx advised, "Sue them. Sue them for the suffering you had to endure."
