Labor nurse praised the ‘father’ for supporting mom through childbirth — until they learned what his connection to the new mom really was

He stayed beside her through every contraction, brought her cool washcloths, encouraged her, and made sure she had whatever she needed.

Every delivery has its own story, but a few are extraordinary enough to turn heads, and one labor nurse witnessed that recently. Instagram user Becca, who goes by @that.labor.nurse, shared one such unforgettable labor-and-delivery story on Saturday, September 26, 2026. She recalled watching a man stay by a woman’s side throughout labor and childbirth, offering encouragement and helping her through every painful moment. At first, Becca was impressed that the man was already stepping up to be a responsible dad, until she learned the surprising truth.

Becca said the man was attentive from the moment the woman arrived. He stayed beside her through every contraction, brought her cool washcloths, encouraged her, and made sure she had whatever she needed. When it was finally time to deliver the baby, he stepped in again, holding one of her legs and cheering her on. After the baby was born, the room filled with tears of joy, and they put matching baby bracelets on the new mother and the man who had supported her through it all. Only then did Becca learn that he wasn’t the baby’s father, her husband, boyfriend, or even her friend; he was a complete stranger she had met at Walmart that very morning.

"She had been out shopping, started having contractions, and this absolute stranger brought her to the hospital," Becca recalled. She said the unexpected part was that he didn’t leave after helping her get to the hospital. He stayed with her through the birth and remained there for two days. Becca joked that he had gone to Walmart expecting an ordinary shopping trip and somehow left with a baby bracelet. The story also reminded Becca why working in labor and delivery is anything but boring. As she put it, "You literally never know who is going to walk through the door. Or, apparently, who they picked up at Walmart along the way."

The comments were just as surprised by the stranger’s actions. @taravalex wrote, "He should consider being a doula." @excelise admitted, "I thought you were going to say 'brother,' but the Walmart stranger is even weirder!" Meanwhile, @micfrank praised the man’s character, writing, "Kudos to his mother, who raised him right."

When a baby is ready to arrive, even strangers can find themselves playing an unforgettable role in the delivery. In another story, a bystander stepped in during one of the most overwhelming moments of a parent’s life. When a couple became stuck in traffic as the woman went into labor, former doula Katie Higgins noticed what was happening and rushed over to help. She guided the mother through the delivery before paramedics arrived and then went a step further. She offered to drive the couple’s car to the hospital so the new dad could stay beside his newborn.
