Stranger helped a mom stuck in traffic deliver her baby before paramedics arrived — then made one more offer that deeply touched the new dad

That was the situation a couple, Karollyn and her partner Nate, faced while driving through Golden Gate Park on a Saturday afternoon on 19 September 2026. Nate pulled onto the shoulder of Crossover Drive near Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and called 911 shortly after 4:40 p.m., as per the San Francisco Fire Department. The ambulance was sent right away, but heavy traffic forced the crew to leave their vehicle and run several blocks to the couple. Before they arrived, Katie Higgins, a former doula, had reached the car and started helping Karollyn through labor. In the middle of the emergency, Higgins also offered to drive the couple's car to the hospital so Nate could stay with his newborn daughter. She had been on her way to her child's soccer game when she noticed the commotion and decided to step in.
Higgins had trained as a doula more than a decade earlier but chose to focus on raising her family instead. Higgins reached Karollyn and helped her control her breathing and push through the contractions. Other strangers also gathered around, with one person bringing a blanket and another finding medical gloves. “It was so surreal,” Higgins recalled after the baby was born. Higgins had also experienced the kindness of a stranger during a family trip to Germany, when one of her children suffered a serious allergic reaction. That memory made the moment feel even more meaningful to her. The unusual birth was made possible by a traffic jam that had become worse than usual that afternoon. Despite the stressful journey, Karollyn, Nate, and their baby girl reached the hospital safely.
