Little girl caught in a riptide was running out of breath and about to drown — then a voice in her head told her how to survive
Some childhood habits seem completely meaningless at the time, only to feel strangely significant years later when life suddenly puts a person in a situation they never could have predicted. TikTok user Milli, who goes by @annamillsxo23, shared one such anecdote on April 25, 2026. She recalled that, during a childhood trip to Rhode Island to visit her sister’s friends near the beach, she was suddenly caught in a violent riptide that dragged her underwater and slammed her against rocks. However, one small voice in her head and a strange childhood habit unexpectedly saved her life.

Milli explained that she kept holding her breath while the current pulled her farther away, eventually reaching the point where she felt certain she was about to inhale water. Right then, she claimed she heard a voice in her head telling her to relax her body because it would “push” her out. With no other option left, Milli said she listened, straightened her body underwater, and moments later shot out of the current so forcefully that she landed upright on the sand while her family ran toward her screaming in panic.
This was also where one particular childhood habit unexpectedly came back into play. Milli explained that, whenever she went swimming as a child, she used to hold her breath underwater and pretend she was drowning, even warning adults beforehand so they would not panic. According to her, the strange behavior came from recurring visions she kept having about being trapped inside an unfamiliar house with a group of people who were being taken out one by one. In those visions, she believed the only way she survived was by making it look like she was drowning in the pool.
Looking back, Milli felt that habit may have ultimately helped save her life during the riptide because it taught her how to stay calm underwater for unusually long periods. Some had interesting theories about whose voice she may have heard. @phophiismyname remarked, "Poseidon, girl that was Poseidon", while @therandomintrover1 mentioned, "Your guardian angel is listening to this." @goldensolarcana noted, "Girl, you’ve been practicing your whole life to save yourself in that moment." Others added a more humorous twist. @heathermcqueary joked, "People keep saying it was God, meanwhile my first thought was mermaid."
Whether people believe the voice was instinct or something spiritual, the story clearly stayed with viewers for a reason. Many children develop strange habits they cannot fully explain at the time. In Milli’s case, pretending to drown underwater as a child may have later helped her survive a real moment of danger. That connection left many people unsettled in the best possible way. It made them wonder whether the mind quietly prepares people for certain situations long before they understand what those lessons are for.
