Some everyday habits seem completely harmless until you hear a story that makes you question them forever. A TikTok creator who goes by @bxtchyraccoon shared one such incident on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. She first heard it from a friend whose mother worked in a hospital's emergency department. She recalled a case in which the doctors were called in after a man's tongue kept itching despite repeated brushing. What they found when they examined it was something he never expected.

@bitchyraccoon It’s been ten years and I still think about this regularly. Beware the envelopes, use some water or just taped it closed or something smh #storytime #storytelling #emergencyroom #medicaltiktok #mail ♬ original sound - bxtchyraccoon

The man arrived complaining that his tongue had been itching badly and nothing seemed to help. He had taken antihistamines and brushed his tongue repeatedly, but the strange sensation continued. Doctors eventually noticed that the flesh appeared to be moving, so they decided to take a closer look. What they found was horrifying. When doctors examined the tongue, they found maggots inside it. It turned out that the man regularly licked envelopes, and larvae on the adhesive strip had gotten into his mouth and embedded in his tongue.

The creator said the story has stayed with her ever since and was enough to make her swear off licking envelopes altogether. She mentioned that the disturbing account came up when she was sending out mail from the office and was sticking envelopes. When her colleague started looking for envelope wetters, the creator asked why people would need those instead of simply licking them. That was when her co-worker told her about the case, based on her mother's recollection, leaving the woman stunned.

The storyteller also stressed that it was not one of those online horror stories. It was a real story coming from someone whose mother actually worked in a local emergency department. The viewers also left plenty of reactions in the comments. @reinamiamor0 offered another hygiene warning, writing, “If you drink anything in the can, wash off the top. Every type of rodent and insect pee and poop all over them in the warehouses.” Meanwhile, @perksofbeingkristenx said, “Everyone needs to hear this.” @brittleggott admitted, “I’m terrified, especially because I love the taste of envelope glue.”

Some medical cases can leave doctors stunned, while others may test even their strongest stomachs. In another medical story, an ER doctor recalled treating a child who developed stabbing pain after eating a deli meat sandwich. Doctors first suspected a toothpick or piece of metal had become lodged in his throat, but an X-ray came back normal. An ENT later discovered the real cause: a cockroach leg embedded in the child's tonsil tissue. The child recovered after the procedure, but his parents still complained about the restaurant, while the bizarre case left viewers horrified.
