Man was on his way to get gas when a familiar-looking SUV caught his eye — one detail he remembered led deputies to a kidnapped teen
Observation and instant action are a powerful combination that can be life-saving. The case was true for a 13-year-old girl, thanks to a sharp Ocala citizen, Daniel Cosby, as reported by WCJB 20 on July 29, 2026. The man was reportedly driving to get gas along U.S. 441 in Belleview when he saw a familiar-looking vehicle. He didn’t ignore his instinct; instead, he figured out where he had learned about the car and made one move that led to the rescue of a kidnapped teenager. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is rendering praise after the citizen’s notable act.
Cosby was driving on the evening of July 27, 2026, when he saw an SUV at a red light. He was certain he had seen the vehicle somewhere before, but couldn’t figure out where. He then looked at the license plate and realized the car was shared via an Amber Alert regarding the abduction of a 13-year-old. When he confirmed the details, he quickly contacted the officers with the information. Before they could intervene, he decided to follow the vehicle from a safe distance, ensuring they didn’t lose track of him again. Deputies later took control of the situation and safely rescued the girl.
In a post, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office shared that she was kidnapped that same day from her home in the morning. Pictures of the suspect, the teen, and the car were shared. The post mentioned that the man was seen “driving a red 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe with Florida license plate 77ERLW.” “The way I handled it, I believe I did the best that I could without interjecting and putting myself into danger and without endangering that child,” the citizen noted. It was later revealed that the suspect was the girl’s mother's former partner. In a violent attempt to flee, the 45-year-old was shot and later pronounced dead at a hospital.
In another post, the sheriff credited technology, his deputies, and Cosby for his prompt movement throughout. “Every minute counts in a case like this,” he said, adding that the license plate reader, amber alert, and other systems helped in sharing as much information as possible. “You paid attention. You trusted your instincts. Most importantly, you took action. You didn't assume someone else would do it,” he said. It can be scary and confusing to act in the spur of the moment when you’re alone in a dangerous situation, but every move counts. In another brave instance, a woman saved a youngster in a possible kidnapping attempt.
The woman was dropping her child off at school when she saw a 12-year-old who looked uneasy while walking away with a suspicious woman. The latter had run across the street and taken hold of the girl and forced her to walk along. The motorist asked the youngster if she was okay, and when she said no, within five seconds she came up with a plan. She told the stranger that she was the girl’s mother and asked the child to get into the car. Her stern voice was convincing enough for the person to leave. The parents later said she was no less than an angel.
