McDonald’s customers demanded their small items be made bigger at drive-thru window — what they did during payment left the worker taking the blame
Working a drive-thru often means juggling multiple tasks while trying to keep the line moving. But it can also involve dealing with unexpected customer behavior. For a McDonald's employee, a routine order quickly turned into one of the most frustrating interactions she'd had on the job. A TikTok creator, who goes by @user87447_, shared a video on June 25, 2026, recalling how a group of customers ordered their meal as usual before asking to upgrade all of their small drinks to large at the drive-thru window. The real problem started when it was finally time to pay. The customers' response left the employee annoyed.
The creator said in the video that the customers placed their order and sat at the payment window for several minutes without paying. She mentioned awkwardly waiting while the drive-thru line behind that car continued to grow. After about three minutes, she asked whether they would be paying with cash or card, only for the passenger to respond, "Hold on," despite the group already keeping her waiting. She said the driver eventually handed over a large handful of coins, and when a single quarter fell to the ground, the passenger insisted she make sure it was counted. Struggling to collect the coins, she estimated the transaction ultimately took around 10 minutes.
She explained that she was working both the drive-thru window and taking orders because the restaurant was short-staffed during a busy rush. Since she'd dealt with similar situations before, the delay didn't really surprise her. She laughed that her boyfriend never believed people would place an order without knowing how they were going to pay, but she had seen it happen plenty of times.
By the time the payment was finally sorted out, the drive-thru line had backed up past the restaurant's parking lot. She said that was the most frustrating part because everyone waiting behind them would probably blame her for the delay, when in reality she had just been standing there waiting for the customers to figure out their payment.
Even though she was irritated, she said she stayed calm and remained professional. What really caught her off guard happened after the payment was complete. One woman in the group insisted that their food "better be fresh." She replied that it had been made fresh, but after spending about 10 minutes sitting at the payment window, it probably wasn't as hot as it had been when it first came out.
The TikTok user's story connected with many viewers, especially those who had worked in fast food. @Itzjustme shared, "My first customer gave me a 100$ bill for a 10$ order." @Riri said, "They definitely thought you were gonna give the food first before they paid." Meanwhile, @azareliiii wrote, "This gave me PTSD… I haven’t worked there in 3 yrs."
Frustrating days are common for employees working in fast-food restaurants. In another instance, a McDonald's employee shared how he tried to help his coworkers during a busy lunch rush after working at the restaurant for only two weeks. But after his manager repeatedly told him to stay away from the kitchen, he stopped helping altogether. As customers and coworkers continued asking for his help, a shift lead later asked why he wasn't doing more, and he explained what had happened. The manager then apologized, admitting she had been overwhelmed during the lunch rush and had overreacted.
