A mom has been garnering praise on the internet for how she responded when a stranger tried to shame her for wearing a casual outfit. The mom, Hilary Flips (@calmlychaoticmom on TikTok), was called out by a librarian for wearing an outfit of her choice. When she was questioned about her attire, she stood against the stereotype and bias with a fitting and flawless response. The mom, in a now-viral clip, revealed her outfit — a pair of high-waisted jeans and a cropped sweater.

“I just got dress-coded at our local library,” Flips remarked. She added that she had purchased the cropped sweater from a teenage brand at Target and it was “probably not age-appropriate.” Nevertheless, the mom was quite comfortable and confident in what she wore. She added, “These jeans are mom jeans. They’re a thousand years old and are literally called mom jeans.” Flips just wanted a change from her regular wear of t-shirts and other outfits and casually picked the cropped sweater. “I was feeling good about myself and she (the librarian) that,” the mom remarked.

The woman recalled being at the library with her kids. She mentioned that it was story time and for some reason, the kids were being chaotic and were all over the place. “I’m chasing my kids around, they’re acting wild. I always get a little stressed out when they’re not sitting during story time,” she explained. Flips was confronted by the librarian soon after story time was over and she seemed to have felt an inconvenience. She initially asked whether the woman was the mom or babysitter. When she clarified, the librarian carelessly commented, “You should know better.” The mom said the woman’s tone was a “judgy” one.

Assuming she was complaining about her children’s misbehavior, the mom began apologizing. However, she was stunned to hear what the librarian had to say in return. “No, your outfit,” she said. The mom wondered whether her buttons were undone or there was some other slip. She was disappointed to learn that the woman had a problem with her outfit because, “when I pick up my 1-year-old, an inch of my mommy belly with its cute little stretched out mom belly button shows.” “It’s inappropriate to be showing the midriff.” In a confident response, the mom boldly said, “Newsflash. I guess I disagree.”

In the caption, the mom added, “Pardon me until I continue to wear cropped tops and high-waisted pants until I’m a grandmother. Might even throw my belly button ring back for extra flair.” Fellow moms and other viewers were proud of the mom’s confidence in herself. @arynkay_reads said, “Tell me which library so I can show up in the croppest of tops.” @theseiteacher remarked, “Please only wear crop tops the next time you go back.” @jenniferom14 added, “That’s totally inappropriate of her to say. Your outfit is totally fine.”
