Mom heard a strange noise on the baby monitor that wasn’t crying or sleep — her stomach dropped when she recognized it

They say 'sleep when your baby is sleeping', but this woman's experience tells you why you really can't.

What began as just another day of routine chores at home became one parent's worst nightmare. For mom, Brielle Mahoney, her day began like any other, until she heard an unusual noise. Mahoney (@brielle_colleen) posted a video on Instagram, in which she can be seen doing daily laundry when she heard a strange sound from the baby monitor in her 1-year-old son Roman's room. As soon as she heard the noise, Mahoney sensed something was off and immediately rushed to her baby, as reported by Newsweek on Monday, January 5, 2026.

She said, “It sounded like he was struggling. My stomach instantly dropped.” Within seconds, her fear was confirmed. She lifted the baby out of the crib and stayed with him as he was continuously vomiting, the outlet reported. Her husband, Michael, called the doctor while she sat with her son in the bathtub. In the video caption, she wrote, “Why am I glued to the baby monitor? We may make jokes about it, but in reality, I think all moms understand.” She expressed that she often feels judged and anxious because of how closely she watches the baby monitor. “I’m grateful I am glued to the monitor because it allowed me to get to my baby quickly and help him,” she added.

Roman was diagnosed with a reaction to eggs. According to the outlet, he was admitted to an emergency room when he first had a reaction. However, his blood reports later came back negative, and doctors told the family that it was safe to introduce eggs again. But he had another reaction during the second attempt. After further diagnosis, it was found that the baby is suffering from Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES), which is a rare food allergy that does not show up on standard blood tests.

FPIES is a rare but serious allergy that often affects infants and young children. According to the international clinical guidelines published in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, the only way to diagnose it is based on symptoms like vomiting, lethargy, or dehydration several hours after eating a trigger food. Mahoney’s experience prompted many parents to flood the comments with messages of support, especially from those dealing with similar allergies. A mother @giadas_corner expressed, “This happened to my son 3 times until we realized it was eggs! He’s 6 now and can eat eggs just fine, but it was so scary. And it always happened while he was sleeping!”

“Good job following your instincts, mama,” expressed @tytocare. Another mom, @s.a.u.g.a.t, mentioned, “Baby monitor cannot even leave my peripheral vision. I have to have it the whole time. With babies, we cannot assume they are just sleeping. Anything can happen within seconds. That’s why I thank the Lord for all the technologies available these days.”
