If you’re a musician living in an apartment, you can only hope you have neighbors who love music and don’t mind the practice. A woman named Maddie Regent–who goes by @himaddieregent on TikTok–revealed that as a pop musician, she had similar hopes for her apartment in New York City. With many elderly people in her building, she hoped she wouldn’t be a disturbance to them and that it wouldn’t become a hindrance to their relationship. However, Regent started to hear some noises coming from her upstairs elderly neighbor as soon as she began playing her music. With many conclusions to make, she was relieved to find a note on her door explaining the reason.

Regent mentioned that she had been living in the apartment for around 6 years, and her building consisted of older people. She didn’t mind them and mentioned that she loved elderly people, but she worried about the noise levels. “I’m not a loud person, we go to bed early, we don’t throw parties, but we love music and I make music,” she explained. All these years, Regent was respectful of the noise levels and other factors while practicing. However, when she “blasted” her very own pop song, “Side FX,” on her speakers, she heard a “loud bang” from her elderly neighbor upstairs. She didn’t know the man much and was worried that he might have been disturbed by the noise.

Initially, Regent had simple interactions with the neighbor upstairs over water issues. However, many people said that he was “weird.” “At first, I was like, damn what’s happening there, is someone lifting weights? Then I remembered that the guy’s 80, so that’s not possible,” she recalled. She got back to her music and heard the sound a second time. Over the days, as she played the song, she kept hearing the banging noises from upstairs. “I play it for like 10 seconds and it’s not even super loud,” she remarked. After the persistent banging only for her song, Regent began thinking that the neighbor might be able to hear the music and didn’t like it.

While a few days passed in this wonder, Regent was surprised to come home to a handwritten note on her door one day. “It says, ‘Dear neighbor, turn it up,’” Regent read, as she smiled to herself in awe and delight. Turns out, the neighbor was enjoying her song each time she played it and wanted her to continue blasting it from her speakers. The woman was feeling super relieved and proud that the noise was just a result of someone enjoying her creation. The 80-year-old left the musician and the internet stunned with his adorable response. @msgoodin said, “That is so cute! Not what I expected you to say.”

@krissy1184 added, “I love him, and I don’t even know him.” @hollaayylujah suggested, “Throw a resident-only launch party for your song. Invite the neighbors and dance together.” @madmommer1 added, “Damn girl, best note ever!” @cehfjayslife remarked, “New York City for you! You never know what you’re gonna get!” @felicitydeyton added, “Now you need to introduce yourself and play music for him.”
