Mom overheard her 7-year-old son refusing to play with toy guns at a friend’s party — his reason left her heartbroken
Children are often keen observers, and in their early years, they tend to take their parents’ advice and lessons very seriously. Sometimes, this shapes the choices they make when spending time around other kids. Recently, a woman shared her experience on TikTok under the handle @hindirlane on February 22, 2026, where her son found himself in such a situation. The boy had been invited to a birthday party, and at one point, the other kids decided to play with toy guns. However, the woman’s 7-year-old chose not to join in. The mother, who was nearby, later overheard her son explaining his decision, and what he said left her stunned.
From the very beginning of the video, her voice and tone reflected the emotional depth of the moment. As someone who liked to be around kids, she overheard a conversation between her son and the kids at the birthday party. The boy whose house they were at, along with other children, had taken some toy guns from the playroom. But when one of them asked her son to join, he refused. The other kid asked him the reason. “My 7-year-old goes to explain, ‘Boys who look like me get hurt when they play with toy guns,’” said the mother, who is a Black woman residing with her family in the US.
The other kid then had a follow-up argument, saying they just had to pretend. The boy continued with his reasoning and said, “I know, but my mommy says I can't. It's scary and dangerous for boys like me.” Her son was deeply influenced by the lessons he learned from his mother, who had thoughtfully considered many factors while raising him.
The woman was left numb by the conversation. She said the friend, who was white, even responded to her son. “Oh! My mommy has never said that,” he said. The other children then started playing with toy guns, while the woman's son ran and picked up a toy dinosaur, as explained in the video. The 7-year-old’s mom was saddened and walked to the bathroom.
The realization that she had needed to have serious conversations with her son, ones she felt non-Black parents often don’t, left her emotionally shaken. And in that context, her choice to have discussions about discipline matters. A report published by The Sentencing Project shows that by 2023, Black youth were 5.6 times more likely to be placed in juvenile detention facilities than their white peers. Beyond a higher risk of being detained, concerns also extend to safety in schools. According to a Word In Black, fewer than 40% of Black middle and high school students feel safe from violence at school.
The video shared by her received heartfelt responses from the users. @busybees83 praised, “You should be so proud. Your son handled it perfectly!” People were also appreciative of the woman’s parenting. @sierrashaebutler mentioned, “You are a really good mom in a really unfair world.” Another user, @clairefrancesse, noted, “You seem like a great mom. That is tough and real life, I’m sorry.” While her child's reaction may have made the mother emotional, she knows how impactful the lessons she imparted to her son are.
