Mom revealed her 8-month-old’s uncommon name after an elderly woman called her ‘gorgeous’ — the stranger's blunt response turned the moment unsettling
Some people refuse to respect others’ choices and choose to rub their unsolicited disapproval in their faces. When mother of two, Sarah Crosbie (@saz_crosbie) was with her 8-month-old at a store, she was approached by an elderly woman at the checkout who took an interest in learning her daughter's name. However, her reaction to the less common name stunned her. Sharing the story with her TikTok followers on February 23, 2026, she revealed that the woman's reaction did not sit well with her, per Newsweek.
Ireland-based mother Sarah Crosbie was at Dunnes Stores when she was approached by an elderly woman who was probably in her 80s. The woman found Crosbie's daughter "gorgeous." She asked the mother how old she was, to which Crosbie responded, "8 months old." However, her next response to her baby's name left Sarah stunned. Sarah, who had named her baby "Billie," was aware that she opted for a less common name for her child. However, after learning that, the elderly woman said, "You're going to get teased for that," directing the comment at the child.
Sarah, who was taken aback by the comment, told the outlet that she had often noticed people's strange reactions to her daughter's moniker. "I just thought it was mad, but also common for the older generation to just say how they feel; they don't hold back," she said. Although Sarah understood that the woman meant no harm, she was baffled by her reaction. She also noted that until that moment, many had complimented her daughter's name.
After Sarah’s video went viral, many users defended her decision to choose a name shared by artists such as Billie Eilish and Billie Piper. @T-DAwg remarked, "My daughter is called Billie. She's 16 now. No one ever teased her for her name, well, except us, I told her, her full name is Billiam." @Eibhlinn listed, "Billie Piper, Billie Eilish, Billie Holiday, Billie Burke, Billie Lourd, the song Billie Jean. It’s not even an uncommon girl name at all." @Tammy Meehan298 mentioned, "I have two girls, 9 and 10, called Charlie and Frankie, and never once have they been teased for their names."
Sharp comments from older strangers can catch people off guard, though they don’t always come from a place of malice. Take Instagram user Michael Brown, for instance. When he wished the elderly woman a happy birthday, she replied, "I'm 91 years old, I hope this is the last one." Brown, who found it funny, assumed that she was cracking a dark joke as well.
However, she was serious and added, "I went to three of my friends' funerals this year. I'm tired." Her comment struck him, and he understood where she was coming from. He later described an emotional fatigue, the kind that settles in as your world gradually shrinks. As he was leaving, he said, "Well, I’m really glad that I got to meet you today."
