Mom shopping at Target follows lost toddler, suspects trafficking — then one look back makes her blood run cold
Every parent knows the instinct to protect a child can strike in an instant, even in a crowded store. TikTok user Mindy Livengood recently shared a chilling experience from a trip to Walmart, where she went to pick up a birthday card for dinner plans. On May 13, 2026, she posted the story on TikTok under the handle @chefmindyskitchen, describing how the quick errand became tense when she noticed a lost toddler and suspected something far more dangerous could be happening.
Mindy recounted how she was focused on the card aisle when she heard the sound of tiny feet beside her. Glancing over, she saw a 2.5-year-old Hispanic girl with no adults nearby. “The mom radar went off,” she said, and she began quietly observing the child as she played with items on the shelves. The toddler made eye contact and said hi before wandering off. Mindy followed, concerned the child might be in danger. While watching, she noticed two men behind her and two women nearby and suddenly realized that she herself could be the target, not the child.
Acting quickly, she confronted the men loudly, asking, “Why are you following me?” They ran out, got into two separate cars, and fled the scene. The experience underscores how unpredictable these situations can be and the importance of trusting instincts. Mindy drew attention from store employees and followed the men to make sure they left the premises. Police arrived shortly after, responding to alerts from staff. Although the full intent of the adults remains unknown, the incident highlighted the risks that can hide in everyday places and the need to stay alert, particularly around unsupervised children.
Mindy concluded her post with advice for others: “Don’t be a victim," while also stressing the importance of confronting anything suspicious. Her quick thinking and bravery left a lasting impression, showing that awareness and courage can make a real difference in protecting oneself. According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, the U.S. identified 11,999 cases of human trafficking in 2024, involving a total of 21,865 victims, underlining the importance of vigilance in public spaces.
It is important to stay aware of your surroundings, especially when you are alone. In another incident, a woman learned this lesson the hard way when she arrived at Denver International Airport around 11 p.m. for a late-night flight and noticed three strangers constantly questioning her about her plans. “These people were following me basically the second I entered the airport, which is terrifying,” she said.
One woman even tried to accompany her to the restroom and put her hands on her. Panicked, she escaped, alerted authorities, and later saw from security footage that she had been targeted the entire time. She recalled the woman in the group saying angrily, “My friend asked you where you are traveling to?” Simultaneously, she was also sending voice notes and texts to keep her family aware. “I don’t remember the ins and outs of it. I genuinely blacked out,” she added, highlighting how frightening the encounter had been.
