Mom stopped a woman in a wheelchair to say her visible bra straps were testing her sons’ ‘purity’ — her comeback left the boys bright red

Women have long faced unsolicited lectures about their clothing, with strangers feeling entitled to weigh in. One woman who uses a wheelchair found herself being confronted by a mother who took issue with her visible bra straps and claimed they were a problem for her teenage sons. What followed was a sharp response that instantly changed the mood of the interaction and left the boys visibly embarrassed. The story, shared online by the Reddit user who goes by u/purrfunctory on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, happened while she was out running errands with her service dog on a hot day, dressed comfortably in a loose tank top, shorts, and a sports bra.
The mother stepped directly in front of the paraplegic woman and pointed out that her bra straps could be seen. When she responded that she was already aware of it, the woman claimed the visible straps were encouraging inappropriate thoughts and testing her sons’ "purity." In the middle of the exchange, the wheelchair user pushed back by asking whether the mother also confronted boys and men when their underwear was visible or if she reserved that criticism only for women and girls. She also referenced the idea that people should be responsible for managing their own thoughts and actions rather than blaming strangers. The moment left the young boys "horrifically embarrassed and bright red."
The woman explained in her post that she had chosen her outfit because of the extreme heat and because many of her clothes had become loose after years of significant weight loss. She said the tank top naturally revealed parts of her sports bra, but she did not consider that a problem. People can often view the same situation very differently depending on their personal beliefs and expectations. To her, the encounter felt unnecessary, especially because she had simply been trying to go about her day without bothering anyone. The woman responded with a sarcastic remark, suggesting it was unreasonable to blame her for what someone else might think.
Not every outfit will appeal to everyone, but that does not make it anyone else's decision. In another incident, a woman was attending church in what she believed was a respectful outfit, consisting of a long skirt, a tucked-in blouse, and flats, when an elderly woman decided to comment on her appearance. According to the story, the older woman suggested her clothing was not very “holy” and told her, “Maybe think about what you’d wear if Jesus were sitting in the front row.” Although the remark caught her off guard, the woman chose not to argue and simply moved on with her day.
Rather than confronting the critic, she came up with a playful response for her next church visit. She arrived dressed in an exaggerated church-style outfit that included a full-length choir robe and several accessories. Describing the look, she wrote, “White gloves. A wide-brimmed hat with a fake bird and a little veil.” She also carried a Bible and wore pearls, stockings, and low heels, leaving little room for further criticism.
