Mom thought her 4-year-old kept forgetting the lunch she packed daily — until one school account detail exposed the story he’d told his teacher
Most parents spend the first few days of preschool figuring out drop-offs, lunchboxes, and how to stop their kids from bringing home every possible germ. But content creator Maddie Muhs found out that her 4-year-old son had a very different priority. She shared the hilarious discovery on Instagram under the handle @itsmaddiemuhs on August 19, 2026, after realizing her son had not been eating the lunch she packed for him and learning the clever excuse he had been giving his teacher for one adorable reason.
Maddie said it started when she and her daughter tucked a "cute little note" into her 4-year-old's lunchbox. But when she picked him up and asked if he saw the note, he told her, "No, I didn't eat my lunch," saying he didn't know it was in his backpack. When she asked what he ate instead, he casually said, "I had a hamburger." Maddie then checked the school account and found a negative balance from all the lunches he had been ordering. She messaged his teacher, who then revealed that lunch wasn't the only meal he had been getting at school. The kids were asked each morning if they had eaten breakfast, and Maddie's son had been telling the staff he hadn't been fed at home.
Meanwhile, Maddie was offering him breakfast every morning and hearing, "I'm not hungry," only for him to head to school and help himself to waffles. The mom couldn't even be mad at her son because, in her words, he was "playing the system." But she clarified to the teacher that she makes breakfast for her kid every morning and packs him a lunch every day. Considering they were only on day four of school, she joked that she could only imagine what the rest of the school year had in store for her. She hilariously described her son's little lunch tactic as a "scam."
Other parents seemed to relate to the little boy's strategy, with some sharing stories of their own kids getting extra meals at school. @kaleysolitro wrote, "My kindergartener ate breakfast at home and a second breakfast at school every day." @itsss.bex asked, "Is he the second-born? Because this is giving second-born energy. This is 100%, my second kid." @everydaybec summed up the whole situation with, "Honestly...game respects game."
Kids can be surprisingly clever and demanding when they decide they want something, especially when it comes to food. In another story, a mom was surprised at her son's food choices when she asked the 2-year-old what he wanted for lunch. To her surprise, he confidently ordered "fritters, mustard, and ranch" before telling her, "Cook it, Mama!" His matter-of-fact attitude left his mom laughing, much like Maddie’s son confidently finding his own way to get meals at school.
