Mom thought toddler was mispronouncing baby brother Matthew’s name and didn’t correct her — her ‘Math me’ logic caught her off guard

The mix-up gave the parents a sweet memory they’ll likely share with their children as they grow older.

Even at a very young age, toddlers begin to pick things up instinctively, often relying on their own unique logic to make sense of what they see and experience. That was the case with Serrena Pedersen’s 2-year-old as she shared her story on TikTok under the handle @serrenapedersen. The mother posted a video on March 30, 2026, narrating her daughter's confusion over the name of her second child, a son whom she and her husband named "Matthew,” as reported by Newsweek on Saturday, April 18, 2026. However, the newborn's sister was unable to pronounce his name correctly. The toddler was knowingly mispronouncing it, and her logic left the mother speechless.

The couple named their second child “Matthew,” giving him the same name as his father. When they told their 2-year-old daughter, Carter, that her brother’s name was “Matthew,” she didn’t quite grasp it and instead called him “Math me.” She kept repeating the same name, leaving her mother puzzled. However, the father soon figured out what was going on and later explained to Pedersen that their daughter interpreted “Matthew” (Math-you) as if it were referring to the pronoun “you.” So whenever she was asked to say his name, she responded with “Math-me,” believing it was about herself.

“At first, I just thought she couldn’t pronounce his name, so that was her way of pronouncing it,” the mother of two told the outlet. She was completely in awe of her toddler’s logic, which was visible as she narrated the incident in the video. The mother didn’t have the heart to correct her daughter, believing that she was too young and might feel embarrassed if she realized her logic was wrong. All she could do was embrace the moment of innocence accompanied by joy.

Viewers found the video hilarious and filled the comment section with their reactions. @kantwistaye noted, "I love the logic of toddlers. It’s not right, but it makes sense in its own way." @brookejanaesweetwine praised, "She’s an intellectual, honestly." Meanwhile, @avarobss expressed, "That’s so funny! I love how toddlers' brains work."

According to a study by First Things First, a child’s brain develops more rapidly between birth and age five than at any other stage of life. This early development plays a crucial role in shaping their ability to learn later on. Pedersen’s daughter, Carter, was still in an early stage of development. Moreover, her excitement about meeting a new sibling, despite being just two herself, likely took over, leading her to interpret his name in her own creative way. The mix-up, however, gave Pedersen and her husband a sweet memory they’ll likely share with Carter and Matthew as they grow older. “It's the cutest thing I have ever seen,” the mom of two remarked.
