Mom was home alone with her baby when her landlord tried entering with keys — his excuse made her put up a warning sign
It’s unfortunate that for many women, their safety is compromised not just by strangers, but also by people they know and trust. Threads user Lee, who goes by @alliahirtan, shared a post on Monday, August 3, 2026, revealing how her landlord gave her a scare by trying to enter her home while she was alone with her baby. When she confronted him, he defended himself with unacceptable reasons, prompting her to write a sign and put it up on her front door.
Lee explained that she was putting her baby to sleep when she saw her landlord trying to unlock and enter the residence with his keys. Since she was home alone, she didn’t want to open the door, but instead asked him why he was trying to come in without any notice. He said he just wanted “to see if the door was locked.” When that reasoning didn’t suffice, he changed his story and told the mom he was checking if they had “moved out.” Both his explanations felt off, especially since her car was parked outside, indicating she was home. She then put up a handwritten sign that read, “Security system is in effect. Camera with an alarm is facing the door. Will contact police if triggered.”
The mom mentioned that there had been previous instances that made her worry about her safety in her own home. She even shared that she suspected unauthorized people were living in the neighboring home, and any discussion with the landlord resulted in him telling her to leave if she had any problems. In an update, Lee shared that she had already added additional locks and security measures, but to no avail. She had even filed a police report and expected a follow-up within a few days. She explained to the officer that “it feels as though he is intentionally trying to create a hostile environment as a scare tactic to force us to break our lease so we will leave and he can keep the security deposit.”
Staying up late at night because you don’t feel safe enough to sleep in your own home is a different level of exhaustion and stress. Commenters quickly warned Lee about the potential danger. @roxie_the_amazon said, “Get a lawyer lined up before you need it.” @thebeastmistress cautioned, “This situation is dire. Mount cameras at all entry points. Document every event. Find alternative housing.” @secretly_abeetle wrote, “I feel like he has dark intentions. You absolutely can press charges or sue him.”
Landlords have no right to control or compromise the safety and daily lives of their tenants. Yet, many renters struggle with privacy and sometimes even their well-being. In another instance, a landlord kept trying to control a family’s life by imposing rules and calling them out for petty things, such as the garden and guest visits.
At one point, he even entered his tenants’ home through the back door without prior notice. After eventually moving out, the family decided to teach him a lesson. They posted fake ads online and added his contact information and address. The ad mentioned that he worked odd hours and handled deals at night. Unwanted visitors and phone calls disturbed his peace, just as he had invaded theirs.
