New mom asked in-laws not to kiss her baby or show up unannounced — mother-in-law's remark about her son being a single dad crossed the line

Each of the rules had a logical reasoning behind it, yet her in-laws took offense to them.

Parents set rules when it comes to their infants because their health and safety are a priority above everything else. These boundaries apply to even the closest family members, and respecting them matters. A mom who goes by u/Res-Ipsa-Loquiter shared on Reddit on October 7, 2026, that she had simple requests her in-laws had to follow for her baby. To her surprise, they not only frowned upon the latter but also made an inappropriate remark that left her feeling disrespected.

The mom revealed that she had three simple rules — no showing up unannounced, no kissing the baby, and no posting the child online. Each of these was backed with logical reasons that were well explained to the in-laws. However, her mother-in-law took great offense. She argued that she should get to spend as much time as she wants with her grandson. She even instigated her husband to believe that she wasn’t allowed to be a grandmother. She went on to tell him that she wanted to feel like she was needed. Then, she told this woman's husband that she’d be able to see the baby a lot more "if he was a single dad.”

The woman never stopped her mother-in-law from visiting. Since she was still breastfeeding and at the initial, messy, and chaotic stages of parenthood, she only asked for a little notice so she could tidy up before she arrived. Yet, the mother-in-law was offended. Furthermore, the grandma hoped to babysit her grandson 5 days a week, but the mom refused, simply because she enjoyed looking after her kids. Even that seemed to be an issue. What felt most disheartening was that the woman and her husband’s mother were close before she got pregnant.

Redditors assured her that she wasn’t in the wrong, and that the mother-in-law needed to learn to respect boundaries. u/loricomments said, “Let her pout about not getting her way and enjoy your peace.” u/WifeofBath1984 remarked, “She's not looking to be a grandparent, she's looking to be the parent.” u/adkSayfre noted, “It's not your job to manage her expectations or emotions.” Couples have different rules that many may not understand or agree with, but it's important to realize that it is set up in the best interest of their child and family lifestyle. In another instance, a mom took a stand for herself and her child after her mother ignored her boundary.

Since the baby had a weak immune system, clear instructions were given that, apart from the parents, no one was allowed to kiss the kid. The grandma agreed and came over to help. To the mom’s surprise, she found the grandma kissing the child while playing. On confronting her, the woman said that nothing had happened to the infant in two weeks, and so she could continue. Furthermore, she turned the blame on the parent, saying rules were the reason kids develop allergies and other issues. The grandma heard an earful from the mom, who called her selfish, and even told her that if something should happen to the baby, it would be her fault alone.
