Recovering from childbirth requires extra support from husbands, but one mother-in-law was not having it. When a Reddit user (u/Lazy_Perfectionist88) was recovering from a traumatic childbirth, she asked her husband to help feed the baby during the wee hours. The new mom had an emergency C-section and was advised by her doctors to take complete rest. However, her mother-in-law sent her son an unbelievable text that left her fuming. Sharing the story on Reddit on Thursday, March 12, 2026, she revealed how her mother-in-law expressed frustration about her son's involvement as a parent, per Newsweek.

Doctors instructed the young mother not to do anything other than care for her baby for the next eight to ten weeks. Due to a lack of sleep, she sought her husband's support in feeding their baby at 4 a.m., so she could get some rest. However, when her mother-in-law learned about this, she decided to interfere in their affairs. She sent a long message to her son, asking him to "stand his ground." Describing feeding his baby as a "big request," the mother-in-law threw a fit over the wife's request to help with child-rearing. She wrote, "She went on about how his sleep is important because he has to drive and 'use his brain at work.'"

The narrator shared a screenshot of her mother-in-law’s text. It revealed that she had learned about the situation from her husband after their son told him about it. The storyteller also alleged that despite her in-laws living close by, they did not offer to help. Meanwhile, her mother-in-law also complained about the Reddit user's mother being present, as she was helping her daughter recover.

"So apparently the postpartum woman recovering from a C-section should just handle the baby all night by herself while dad protects his sleep?" she wrote. Postpartum recovery requires a lot of patience and support from the husband and his family. When a woman goes through childbirth, supporting her postpartum journey is the least any family member can do.

While new mothers often struggle to adjust to the new normal, the responsibility of making that transition smoother also lies with the family. By helping with the baby and allowing the new mother time to recover, the family not only lessens her burden but also creates a positive environment for healing. The mother-in-law's response shows a lack of empathy for the mother's well-being. While it is understandable to be concerned about her son's sleep, she should also recognize that her reaction reflects an insensitive attitude toward someone who birthed her grandchild.

Soon after her post gained traction, many users sided with the new mom. u/doomandchill noted, "Sounds like you have a husband problem since he's not helping and whined to his dad the one time he did." u/Narrow_Cantaloupe758 commented, "I've been no contact with my mother-in-law for almost a year… free yourself from her. Tell your husband to grow some balls and stop running to Mommy and Daddy just because you're asking him to help with the child he helped create."

u/Inside_Beautiful_595 remarked, "You're tired and recovering, and your husband isn't helping much. Not only that, but he has obviously complained about being asked to help. Your issue isn't your mother-in-law." The user also mentioned that her husband had confronted his mother about similar behavior in the past and understood her tendencies. While the mother-in-law later said she never meant to upset her daughter-in-law, the new mom felt the apology lacked sincerity.
