A disruption caused by a natural emergency is the last thing anyone would wish for on their wedding day. Unfortunately, it became a reality for a couple, Visha and Ankeet Shah, in Oklahoma when a tornado struck while they were enjoying their wedding celebration on a Friday night, as reported by KOCO News on April 6, 2026. The guests were evacuated by the wedding planner, Sydney Ore, with Weddings with Vara, to a volleyball court, where the OKC Heat 15 National Volleyball Team was warming up for a tournament. What they thought would end in defeat turned out to be a precious memory thanks to the kindness of the strangers.

The duo had made strenuous preparations at the Oklahoma City Convention Center for their big day. However, the music and festivities were suddenly interrupted as sirens began blaring, signaling that something was wrong. Couples vow to stand by each other through the toughest times, and it seemed fate chose to test the Shahs from day one. “I remember them saying, 'We have an emergency! There's a tornado watch happening, and we need to take shelter and go downstairs,'" the groom recalled. The bridal couple thought it was the end of their day until they met the athletes at the court. Two major plans transformed, and what followed was unexpectedly wholesome. The team decided to celebrate the couple in their own way.

According to Ankeet, around 400 people evacuated and moved to the first floor within 10-15 minutes. Kinley Anderson, who is part of the OKC Heat 15 National Volleyball team, was present there and told the outlet, “I was warming up for my game, and the sirens went off.” Ore explained how it started with her chatting with one of the coaches, but soon the girls rushed onto the court, took pictures with the couple, and cheered them on with chants. “The girls were basically singing with us, dancing with us. They made us feel like royalty,” the groom said. Anderson confirmed that they had joined the party.

The wedding celebrations were disrupted before a traditional dance, Garba, was performed. It was something which the bride admitted she was most excited about. Luckily, they recreated Garba while sheltering on the volleyball court. “It was the kindness of strangers, truly. My tears were sad in the beginning, but then, towards the end, it was happy tears,” the bride said. What could have been a dark moment in their memory turned joyful, as everyone began dancing in silence without music. The couple also confirmed their actual wedding was scheduled for the next day, and it went off perfectly. But they surely have plenty of stories to tell the next generation of Shahs, about how their wedding day quite literally weathered the storm. “I couldn’t have imagined what happened,” the bride said.
