Passenger tightens his seatbelt and grabs his wife’s hand after Delta pilot’s ominous announcement — the landing left his legs shaking for hours
Turbulence during bad weather is expected, and passengers are usually able to stay calm, hoping the rough patch will pass soon. But the real fear can kick in when the pilot makes an ominous announcement. That’s what happened to a traveler, who goes by u/AlternativeBid2291 on Reddit, while flying with a Delta flight from London to New York. In a post shared on August 25, 2026, he described how severe weather forced the plane to circle JFK, leaving everybody stressed. When they were expecting reassurance, the pilot made an announcement that left them even more terrified before landing.
The passenger explained that the flight had been uneventful until the final 45 minutes, when the plane approached JFK, and the pilot announced that air traffic control could not clear them to land because of the weather. The aircraft was told to circle the airport and wait for further instructions, with the possibility of landing somewhere else to refuel before returning to JFK. About 15 minutes later, the pilot announced they had clearance, but ended with, "Let’s see how this goes." The man immediately tightened his seatbelt and grabbed his wife’s hand as the plane began bouncing and shaking. Eventually, they heard the landing gear come down, and a few minutes later, the plane touched down safely, leaving the entire cabin cheering in relief. He compared the experience to that of being inside a "cocktail shaker" and said it took him two hours before his legs stopped shaking after that event.
Even though he said he is a fairly experienced flyer, he had never experienced a landing like that before. He later thanked the pilot and crew for the safe landing he'll never forget, saying he could only imagine the skill and concentration it took to get everyone safely onto the runway. The experience also had a strange moment of relief. The passenger said the turbulence was so intense that his friend, sitting behind him, heard a rabbi across the aisle suddenly exclaim, "Jesus Christ!"
Commenters praised the pilots for staying calm during such a frightening landing. u/daphuc77 said, "Hours of boredom punctuated by minutes of sheer horror." u/BlueKat133 joked, "That was a good story until the rabbi said Jesus Christ and then it became a great story!" u/Helpful-Egg-5407 said, "Great work to the crew, and good on you for trusting their judgment."
Pilots often go out of their way to ensure their passengers are comfortable and feel safe. On another flight, passengers were waiting for more than two hours at an Atlanta airport and were frustrated about the flight delay. But as they looked outside, they spotted their pilot, Captain Paul, loading bags himself because there was only one ramp agent available. He wanted to avoid any additional waiting and stepped in to help as best as he could. Later, another gate agent arrived, and they were able to speed things up. What started as an annoying obstacle quickly turned into a moment that flyers applauded.
