Petrified woman was cornered by a man at a supermarket — until a bystander’s 30-second move helped her escape
Many bystanders hesitate to step in because they fear putting themselves at risk. However, one passerby refused to walk away when she witnessed a woman in trouble. Instagram user and influencer Liv Nevill (@livnevill) saw a petrified woman being cornered by a man at a Sainsbury's supermarket. But her quick thinking, which took less than 30 seconds, allowed the woman to get away safely. On April 21, 2026, Nevill shared how her intervention helped the stranger escape the situation.
Nevill saw the man crouching down to the woman's level, making her feel trapped. She immediately pretended to be her friend and went up to hug her, saying, "Hey, how are you?" The other woman also picked up on the cue and played along. They quickly walked out of the store, making sure the man couldn't follow them. The woman thanked Nevill for her support during the frightening encounter.
Recalling the incident, Nevill explained that it took hardly 30 seconds out of her day to help the woman. "It made her feel like she could get home safely and diffused an entire situation that could have really escalated," she noted. Sharing the video online, she captioned, "We have to look out for each other. I find this the most effective way."
According to a report published by Tulane University in 2024, nearly 82% of women have faced sexual harassment or assault during their lifetime. The report highlighted that many perpetrators are often strangers who harass women in public spaces. Anita Raj, Executive Director of Newcomb Institute, noted, "While attitudes and policies have improved since the start of the #MeToo movement, our latest data shows that sexual harassment and assault remain a pervasive problem across our society with clear social and health impacts on victims."
When Nevill noticed that the other woman was uncomfortable being cornered, she knew she needed to help before things went awry. Her quick decision to pretend to be her acquaintance must have prevented the man from continuing to harass her, helping the woman get out of the store. After Nevill shared the video on Instagram, there was an outpouring of positive remarks from internet users, who praised her for her act of kindness.
@lifewith.leila recounted, "A man actually saw this happening to me once and saved me from the situation. There are some good ones! I was a bit slow to realise he was helping, but I appreciated it so much!!" @lunadoesalot commented, "Well done, girl. Nice to see the community working together to keep each other safe." @kaitlinkeegans remarked, "Very happy human beings like you exist!"
