Plane passenger asked for a trash bag after a stranger complimented his tote bag — what he did next surprised her

In a Threads post shared on August 4, 2026, under the handle @dejaisrad, she shared that she complimented a passenger's tote bag while he boarded her flight. She recalled how the stranger's unexpected response left her completely speechless.
Deja explained that a few days ago, one stranger's tote bag caught her eye when he boarded her flight. She had simply told the passenger how much she liked his tote bag. She wasn't expecting anything in return, so she was surprised when he immediately called a fellow flight attendant and asked for a trash bag. Thinking he was throwing something away, she watched as he emptied all of his belongings into the trash bag. She was stunned when he immediately offered her the tote and insisted that she keep it for herself. Deja says she found the gesture really sweet and that it made her entire week.
The unexpected gesture caught Deja completely off guard. In a follow-up post, she posted a picture of the tote when she reached home. She later found the tote bag online, but said what made it truly special wasn't the bag itself. She explained that she collects tote bags from her travels around the world, and receiving one as a gift from a passenger turned it into a meaningful bag. She said she would always remember the interaction and the stranger's kindness. Later, Deja also revealed that the passenger was from Durban, South Africa. Looking back, she said the thoughtful exchange reminded her that sometimes the smallest acts of kindness can become the most memorable part of a journey.

They just want to make people happy." Deja replied that he was from Durban, South Africa, calling him "the kindest soul!"
