Pregnant mom was expecting a 13-pound baby—but got a mind-boggling surprise during delivery

Some births come with big surprises. A couple was surprised at the birth of their twins, too. Because they weren't expecting twins in the first place. The woman, Meagan Peoples, was pregnant at the height of the pandemic and didn't get a chance to go to many ultrasound appointments. She had also had large babies in her first two pregnancies, so she really wasn't surprised that her baby seemed large the third time she was carrying. Little did she know that she was in for a big surprise, per CBS News.

"Meagan's always had really large babies. We were fully expecting that trend to continue and have like a...13-pound baby," the woman's husband, Connor, remarked. The babies were one in front of another instead of being on top of each other. The man couldn't go to ultrasound appointments with his wife because of pandemic restrictions and the woman felt reluctant to go to them on her own. The expense of all the appointments didn't feel worth going alone. She didn't want to be the only one to get to see her babies, either. "It's his baby, too. I'm not going to come without my partner."

Now that all the signs felt fine, she was not too worried about the health of her baby and her own health either. After the term was over, she ended up having a home birth. Everything was going as expected and her son, August, was born. But then they got the big surprise. "There's two midwives when we did our home birth...and the second one looked down and she was like, 'Oh lord, there's another!'" Meagan recounted. A few minutes later, their daughter, Aria, was born. "There's two. And then a part of you is like, well, we weren't expecting two, so is there a number three now?" Connor thought. The couple was still excited to know about the surprise and their twin children.

"I've been at home for months, it feels like. It made it really worth it when we ended up with two," Meagan said. There could be quite a few scenarios in which parents could have a surprise twin birth, per Healthline. A first ultrasound early in the pregnancy, the lack of ultrasounds throughout the duration, twins sharing an amniotic sac, a baby hidden behind their twin, or in some corner of the uterus during the ultrasound and an error from the technician while checking the mother are some of the reasons behind such a birth. One can never be one hundred percent sure before the birth.
Such surprises could be unusual and happen in different ways. According to another story, a 47-year-old woman had been suffering from unbearable abdominal pain. But when she finally went to the hospital, she ended up giving birth to a baby, per WCVB. The woman, Judy Brown, was quite surprised to have a baby as she and her husband, Jason, weren't expecting one. Nonetheless, when she finally gave birth, the couple was glad for the blessing of their eight-pound bundle of joy. Brown thought that she was going through menopause and other hormone and age-related symptoms and thus couldn't find out that she was pregnant.
