Rude homeowner troubled elderly couple next door by blocking property—their neighbor stood up for them in an epic way
Everyone is expected to grow and get the best for themselves. However, this should not come at the expense of another’s peace of mind. People should be considerate and empathetic about others’ needs and adjust accordingly. Similarly, u/diypackraft shared an incident where their friend’s dad came to the rescue of an elderly couple who were being harassed by a new homeowner in their area. When the man refused to adjust and continued disturbing the couple’s area, the neighbor had an on-point plan in response. The post mentioned that the area was steep and “the driveways have to switch back up from the main road to the houses. A straight driveway is not an option because it would be steeper than the building code allows.”
An elderly couple lived in the area and had another vacant plot next to their house. A man had bought that plot and began construction work. “Unfortunately, the lot was so steep that the new owner built his driveway partly on the old couple’s land,” the post revealed. The man didn’t even bother to consult the couple and made a selfish decision without even informing them. “They came home one day to see a huge scar in the hillside snaking up from the road in front of their house, across the corner of their property, and winding upwards to where an excavator was working to prepare the land for their new neighbor’s house,” the post read.
The couple was upset. They approached the new owner and spoke with him first to try and work something out. They thought there must be a mistake and it could be rectified. However, “he flat out denied that the driveway crossed the property line and he was rude enough that the old guy was pretty upset,” the post read. The couple went through the trouble of getting their facts correct, checking measurements and spaces and even revisiting the problem. They also tried to speak to the owner multiple times, but in vain. “It was clear he was an unreasonable guy who wasn’t going to negotiate willingly,” it was added.
The couple didn’t wish to take legal action and there was nothing more they could do. “The situation stewed for a while, until one day when my friend’s dad saw the old couple in the neighborhood,” the post read. When he learned of the situation, he was enraged that the owner was taking advantage of them. “He called up the old couple, explained his plan, and asked for their permission to carry it out. They chuckled and gave him the go-ahead,” the post said. The neighbor hopped into a “full-size pickup and drove it over to the old couple’s place, where he parked it across the encroaching driveway, making sure it was entirely on their property.”
The friend's dad left his number on the car's window, well aware of what was to follow. When the crew arrived for their work at the new place, they couldn't go ahead due to the blockage by the vehicle. When they tried to call and negotiate with him, he refused to move his car and clearly stated he had the couple’s permission to park in their space. “Furthermore, if anyone attempted to tow the truck, they would be charged with trespassing and theft,” the post explained. The workers refused to continue till both parties resolved the issue. Ultimately, the owner called the couple, and they said, “the vehicle was parked on their own property.” Eventually, the owner gave in and “the nice old couple ended up with a significant sum of money in exchange for an easement allowing the driveway to pass across the corner of their property.”
