Russian 'daredevil' couple climbs the Empire State Building for a proposal—but the NYPD pilot’s deadpan 5-word reaction steals the moment

The Empire State Building stunt ended in arrests, but its mix of romance, activism, and risk captivated viewers.

Sometimes the most unexpected proposals happen in places where nobody would ever think to look. That was the case when two figures suddenly appeared atop the Empire State Building's spire, leaving tourists and people on the streets of New York wondering what exactly they were witnessing. The moment first gained attention through a video shared by CBS under its TikTok handle @cbsnews on July 1, 2026, before Eyewitness News published additional details the following day. Witnesses initially assumed the pair were maintenance workers or authorized staff members. However, as crowds gathered below and helicopters circled overhead, it became clear that the Russian couple had a very different purpose in mind.

"He just proposed to her." An NYPD chopper pilot described the moment two climbers were spotted atop the Empire State Building's spire after scaling the iconic landmark. Streets below were shut down as officers, including the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit, responded. The Russian self-proclaimed "rooftopper" pair, known for scaling some of the world's tallest buildings,  were taken into custody, and no injuries were reported. Police sources say they could face charges including trespassing and reckless endangerment.

Part of what made the incident spread online was the remarkably calm reaction captured in the video. As viewers watched two people standing atop one of New York's tallest landmarks, the pilot reporting from above initially sounded more curious than alarmed, casually trying to understand the commotion unfolding on the building. Even after learning that a man and woman had climbed the spire, his tone remained unexpectedly relaxed. The moment took an amusing turn when he suddenly remarked, "He just proposed to her," delivering the update with the same matter-of-fact tone one might use to describe everyday traffic.

The contrast between the dangerous climb and the pilot's nonchalant reaction left many viewers amused, making the extraordinary moment feel strangely ordinary. However, according to some internet users, it is apparently just "New York Things." @emma said, "Acting like it’s a regular occurrence," while @fumikairain commented, "The most New York conversation I’ve heard." @sashamae87 wrote, "I’m obsessed with how New York this conversation was."

The couple initially unfurled a pro-peace banner that read, "When the power of love beats the love of power, the world knows peace." Authorities also identified them as Angela Nikolau and Ivan Kuznetsov, two self-described "rooftoppers" who have built a following by scaling some of the world's tallest buildings and structures without safety equipment.

Their relationship and high-risk climbs were previously documented in the 2024 Netflix documentary "Skywalkers: A Love Story," which followed their daredevil exploits around the world. While the Empire State Building stunt resulted in arrests and numerous criminal charges, many viewers were struck by the unusual combination of activism, romance, and risk, turning the incident into something far larger than a simple trespassing case.

As far as unusual proposals go, couples who share a love for adventure often find creative ways to make the moment unforgettable. In another story, Michigan couple David Balasa and Haley Wiewiora turned their shared passion for water into an engagement unlike any other. The pair had been dating for two years when Balasa planned a surprise road trip across the Midwest as a Christmas gift, secretly building the proposal into the final destination. The couple eventually arrived at Johnny Morris' Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium in Missouri, where Balasa had worked with staff to organize an underwater proposal during the attraction's shark dive experience.

Then, surrounded by sharks inside the aquarium tank, he pulled out a ring box. However, instead of an engagement ring, Wiewiora discovered a shark tooth that served as a placeholder for the real ring. The proposal became even more emotional when she realized that family members had secretly traveled nearly 10 hours to witness the moment. Wiewiora later said the gesture showed how deeply her now-fiancé understood her interests, again proving that for some couples, the most memorable proposals are the ones built around the passions they already share.
