Server feared the worst when customer asked for the manager — then heard the most unexpected remark about her service
Servers are always particular about not offending customers. They make sure that the guests have a great dining experience. However, what they loathe the most is when the customer wants to speak to the manager, which sends the waiter's anxiety levels through the roof. That's exactly what Threads user Stephanie Young Merchant (@worldsmeanestmom) witnessed. While dining at a restaurant, she asked the server to call the manager so she could comment on the service. But her feedback turned into a surprise. Sharing the heartwarming story on Threads on March 10, 2026, Merchant delved deeper into the staff member's behavior that day.
When Merchant asked her server to call the manager, she instantly saw her getting nervous. Unbeknownst to the server, Merchant was going to surprise her. When the manager arrived, she immediately told them that of all the places she had dined, this server was the best staff member she had encountered all year. "I don't know what you pay her, but double it. Triple it. Because she is worth every penny," she noted.
Merchant also revealed she had left a huge tip for the server, noting that the waitress had been extra careful about the food she served. "I have a food allergy, and she was careful and checked with the kitchen to make sure what I ordered could be prepared safely," she added. The customer continued praising the server and even expressed that she would want someone like her to train future employees because of her excellent serving skills. Merchant's post gained immense love and appreciation from internet users who shared their thoughts on it.
While a few suggested that she should not make servers anxious by keeping them waiting, others noted that genuine appreciation like this could brighten someone's stressful workday. @taracatlovermom mentioned, "This has happened to me many times, the entire time you think I don't understand what I did wrong? Every single time a customer asks for a manager." @sloviesays recounted, "Same thing happened at a McDonald's somewhere in Rhode Island. We asked for a manager and praised the worker who had helped us several times during our visit." @oh.haykristen wrote, "Everyone should do this for their server."
Some tips don't really come in cash. In another story, a Reddit user was once serving a family of three during a busy shift. After the family left, the waitress noticed a folded napkin with a few crayons tucked inside. They opened the napkin to find an emotional note that left them in tears. The little boy who had accompanied his parents to the restaurant thanked the server for "being nice" to his parents. The server kept the napkin to themselves and noted how the little note made their day.
