She booked a honeymoon-style Europe trip with her Tinder date, hoping for a ‘magical romance’ — then one brutal twist left her stranded and broke
A vacation planned around a new relationship can feel very different when a partner has other plans. Zena Wozniak, a single woman from Los Angeles, hoped a six-week European holiday would bring her closer to a man she had met through Tinder. Their connection had grown after meeting in San Francisco, and she started imagining what a future together would look like. She spent money on flights, trains, and stays across Europe, including romantic Airbnb bookings in Italy and Greece. However, those plans took a very different turn from what she had expected. Her personal story was later shared in a Substack post on September 9, 2026, and later reported by the New York Post on Friday, September 18, 2026.
After connecting on Tinder and having a wonderful time together in San Francisco, the woman was convinced she was meant to be with her beau. She booked the long trip, splurging on romantic spaces, picturing an ideal "honeymoon." The man seemed stoked to learn that she was arriving. However, the painful turn came when he ended things soon after Wozniak arrived in London. He told her, "I'm not well at all, Zena," explaining that work pressure and seeing his ex again had left him unsure about their relationship. He offered to let her stay in his apartment while he went elsewhere, leaving her to deal with the sudden change in plans alone. She didn't have the resources for another hotel stay, and spent the next three days sulking, trying to find a solution.
Her dreams came crashing down, and she realized she had no option but to take that six week-trip and make the most of her already spent finances. She eventually began traveling alone and described this change as "a much more freeing" experience. Looking back, Wozniak does not see the trip only as a mistake, despite the loss and heartbreak it caused. She still believes taking the journey gave her an experience she would not have had otherwise. Her old motto, "Make. Interesting. Choices," remained important to her even after the romance ended badly. She added, "I hope other single young women realize how capable they are and how much magic they can bring to the world — with or without a man.”
Modern dating apps can bring hope when a romantic connection begins, but not every spark ends well. In another incident, a woman gave dating apps a chance after leaving a five-year relationship and matched with someone on Hinge from her town. He seemed polite and confident, quickly suggesting dinner at an expensive restaurant. She agreed despite having some doubts about meeting him so soon. The evening started with drinks and conversation, and he spoke about wanting a serious relationship. She hoped the date would go well, but things changed when he went to the restroom and did not return, leaving her to foot the bill. "I'm never in my life going on another first date off an app," she exclaimed.
