Dating apps can be fun, scary, and sometimes uncomfortable, too. Sometimes, a single text is enough to change how you see someone and make you rethink the dating apps altogether. For Sneha, something very similar happened when her Hinge date turned into an uncomfortable reality check after one seemingly harmless restaurant recommendation. Posting a video on Instagram, @snuberr recounted that during lockdown, she downloaded the dating app, believing it to be safer than other dating platforms. She had never been in a relationship and felt pushed to try dating apps after one of her friends decided to get a boyfriend during the lockdown period. The video has received over 1.3 million views online.

The woman shared that when setting up her profile, she chose a Hinge prompt that felt simple and genuine. Sneha explained, “On Hinge, you can pick a prompt, and the prompt that I picked was what's something that you're most proud of.” Her answer was a detailed “food list” stored in her notes app, a ranked list of mom-and-pop restaurants in her area. She recalled that the list got more reactions than any picture she posted of herself. However, that unexpected attention made her feel confident. She said, jokingly, “Maybe I'm secretly good at this, maybe I'm secretly good at dating apps. This is why they say coaches don't play because it wouldn't be fair for the rest of the team.”

Soon after, she matched with a man who seemed genuinely interested. She said, “I ended up matching with someone. He goes I'm new to the area, I would really like to try your list.” Within 24 hours, he found her on Instagram and the two began texting. Looking back, she admits it escalated quickly. She said, “Looking back, that's probably too fast and a little weird.” The next day, when she was at work, the man texted her again, telling her that he really wanted to try a new place tonight and asking for recommendations. She shared, “There's this Mexican food place that's supposed to be really good, but I haven't tried it yet, and I'm busy tonight, so can we do this weekend?”

Everything was fine until his response, just a few hours later, caught her off guard. She recounted, “He goes,  ‘I was actually asking because I wanted to try a new place tonight. I wasn't asking if you wanted to come with me.’” He went anyway and enjoyed, and then told her that if she wanted to try that later, she should, Sneha explained. She realized that he wanted 'Yelp', not her. Immediately after the conversation, Sneha unfollowed him on Instagram and deleted his number. She said, “I don't need this negativity in my life.” The following day, she received another message from him asking why he was unfollowed, which sealed her decision. “And then I deleted the app, and I've never downloaded one again.”

Her story resonated well online, with many viewers sharing their own experiences in the comment section. “That was one of the easiest ways he could have asked you on a date, and he failed miserably,” said @raccoon._.crimes. “Him confirming why he was unfollowed is so funny,” wrote @anna.scheel. @t0re__ commented, “That man was looking for free labor.”
