Shopper turned around to see old man in tears asking, 'Where's my wife?' — the truth made her cry her eyes out
A stranger might need a person's kindness more than what meets the eye sometimes. A woman who encountered an old man looking for his wife in a supermarket chose to be kind and it worked wonders for him. The man was confused and in tears when he approached the woman. Soon enough she discovered the real reason behind the man's state. The woman shared her story with Love What Matters. She pointed out why kindness, even if it might be a little inconvenient for the person is necessary.
"The other day, I was out grocery shopping at my local supermarket around 6:30 p.m. when an older man turned a corner into the pasta aisle and put his hands on my shoulder," the woman began. She wanted to tell off the stranger for giving her a jump scare until she looked at the man's state. He was crying and asked the woman, "Where is my wife?" He had been looking for her for quite some time. The woman asked him to walk with her to the customer service counter with her and the man agreed. "There, the woman asked for a name. He looked to me in confusion, as if I had the answer for him," she continued. The person at the customer service had started getting impatient as the man simply couldn't recall his wife's name.
As the woman had a grandpa with a similar condition, she immediately felt that the old man might have Alzheimer's. "I took him to the food court and we sat down. He was now shaking and crying softly. 'Where is my love?'" the person shared. She wondered if the man had a cell phone on him and he replied that he wasn't sure. The woman asked if she could search his pockets and the man agreed. "I was careful. In it, I found a small flippy phone. I searched through his contacts and found one that read 'Daughter Krissy.' I immediately called her. She answers in seconds." The woman on the other end seemed to be already looking for her dad in a panicky state when she received the call. The customer who had found the old man shared their location with her.
"'On my way,' she said. 'Can you make sure he doesn’t wander off?' She continued, 'Thank you, thank you. I’m coming,'" the woman revealed her conversation with the daughter. In the duration the daughter arrived, the woman tried to comfort the old man who was still crying and asking about his wife. She tried to do everything in her power to make sure he didn't wander off. The man's daughter came in and explained, "I had to leave for just an hour, and this happened. I knew I shouldn’t have left him. I’m SO sorry." The woman added, "She explained that he sometimes runs off and looks for his wife. That he lost her 13 years ago, but he never stops trying." The man then left with his daughter.
"The majority of this world are strangers to you. I know that. But never forget that we all share this world together, and in it, we can share kindness," the woman expressed. The woman had to refind all her groceries because her cart was unloaded and she made dinner late at home because of the chaos but she didn't care. "I went home and cried my eyes out in the kitchen for this sweet, poor man. Kindness costs nothing."
