Toddlers were asked 'What is love?' - their responses are more profound than we could have ever imagined
The concept of love has been made complex over time. With philosophies, theories and so many sophisticated perspectives, the idea of authentic, pure love in any relationship has been misunderstood by many. If you’re wondering what falling and being in love is like, don’t look into big books or search the internet for hours, just ask a child. They have the best understanding of what true love is. A couple of kids were asked what love is and they had heart-melting and profound answers to share, per Samaritan’s Purse. With the simplest responses, they managed to cover all the crucial factors love accounts for and it’s the only guide you'll ever need.
A few toddlers were called in an interview to share what they thought of love. All were asked one question, “What is love?” Comfortable with their personalities, each gave a soulful answer. One young girl noted, “Love is a gillion things (sic).” Another kid thoughtfully added that love is helping someone even if you don’t want to. Going out of one’s way, doing the little things - all of these are encompassed in his one statement. A few others were convinced that love is all about sharing, especially toys! - or things closest to your heart! “It’s smiling and saying good things about them,” a boy remarked.
Recalling how they exhibited love in the most mundane situations, many kids weren’t able to define but express what love is. One girl shared that she complimented someone’s clothes, and another recalled playing with a kid when “they had no one to play with.” Going through emotional rollercoasters together, lifting the other up, all of the kids’ wholesome ideas have so much hidden in simple words! “When people love me, I feel the need to be loving to others,” one boy noted. Another shared, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” Quite a bit of wisdom there. Give and get love, is the one concept every human should strive towards. Their list of love went on.
One girl suggested giving someone you love food and we couldn’t agree more. Food is a love language like no other. Another shared that giving them a healthy platter like “fish, apples, peas and beans” is where the love is at. “Love is hugging your mom and helping her wash the dishes,” one kid said. Undoubtedly, acts of service and affection are a spot-on requisite. Many of them pointed out that love is also kissing, holding hands and helping others. “If we love others, they can love the world,” a boy rightly noted. Lastly, one of the toddlers demonstrated love by randomly calling his mommy and giving her the cutest peck to show what love is. It’s that simple, straight from the heart. People got the much-needed reminder that love doesn’t have to be as complicated as it is. It just needs a small start coming straight from the heart.
