Traveler accepted she’d have to sleep at the airport after her hotel booking in Greece fell through — the call she got 10 minutes later broke her down
Long flights are tiring enough, and all a traveler wants after landing is to get to the hotel, check in, and finally get some sleep. But when a hotel booking falls through, even that simple plan can turn into a physically and mentally exhausting ordeal. One traveler had to go through something similar after a 5-hour flight from Italy to Greece, arriving at 5 a.m. with no sleep and nowhere to stay until the hotel’s 3 p.m. check-in time. Saff, who shared the experience on Instagram as @havealaughwithsaff_ on July 28, 2026, had already accepted that she might have to sleep at the airport before the hotel suddenly called her. They said something that left her ugly crying.
Saff said her hotel booking had not gone through, and after landing, she called the hotel to explain what had happened. They apologized but told her there was not much they could do, leaving her with hours to kill before the 3 p.m. check-in. With nowhere else to go, she thought she would probably have to spend the morning sleeping at the airport. But about 10 minutes after she called the hotel, Saff's phone rang. It was the hotel manager who told her, "I can't let you sleep in the airport. It breaks my heart; I have a family. We've had your room cleaned early." He asked her to come over within the next 15 minutes so she could finally get some sleep, telling her, "You haven't had any." The kind words moved Saff to tears.
Saff said the call completely caught her off guard. Before she settled in, the hotel owner also asked Saff to look out the window. Outside was a beautiful view of Greece, something he hoped would cheer her up after such a stressful start to the trip. After expecting to spend the morning sleeping at the airport, Saff was now in a room with a scenic view and a chance to finally rest. Looking back on the experience, Saff said the manager's gesture meant a lot to her. She even urged viewers to visit his guest house and the art store he has just below the B&B. She wrote that the man is "so full of love and joy and has time for anyone."
When Saff posted the story on Instagram, it reached millions of people and touched many hearts. People even praised the hotel owner in the comments. @the_chapter_she_chose said, "I wish I could buy his art online; there are two there I’d love a better look at." @juliamonika_s called him “a beautiful soul,” while @amys_weight_shed praised Greek hospitality, writing, "I find the people of Greece some of the most beautiful hospitable people that I’ve ever met."
Being stranded in an unfamiliar place can feel frightening when you don't know where you will sleep or who you can turn to for help. In another story, a woman in her 70s from Cuba had her flight delayed during a layover in Miami. As she had no place to stay, a man she had met there called his wife and asked if the woman could stay with them. His wife immediately prepared a bed, made hot food, and helped contact the woman's family to let them know she was safe. The old lady was left overwhelmed by how the family went out of their way to help her.
