Two weeks after losing her mom to dementia, woman got a package she couldn’t remember ordering — her husband’s response ended the 13-year marriage
How a person reacts during an unexpected situation can say everything about their mindset and personality. A Reddit user who goes by u/SageAuric witnessed this just weeks after her mother died following severe dementia. In a post dated August 9, 2026, she shared that she received an Amazon package she didn't remember ordering, joked about it, and her husband responded in a way that left her deeply unsettled. What he said was ultimately the last straw, prompting her to end her 13-year marriage.
She explained that two weeks after her mother died on January 2, 2026, she received an Amazon package and joked to her husband that she couldn’t remember what she had ordered, adding that maybe she had "a touch of dementia." According to her post, her husband immediately cornered her, put his finger against her nose, and said, "If you ever become sick like your mother was, I won’t treat you as nicely as you treated her." His face looked dark, his tone was menacing, and he was snarling as he said it. It convinced her that it was a threat rather than a joke. After he returned from a work trip, she told him she was divorcing him and, with the help of an attorney, ended their 13-year marriage.
The comment hit especially hard because the woman said she had spent years caring for her mother as she was coping with Parkinson’s disease that progressed into severe dementia. She said she had already ignored an affair her husband had years ago and that she had stayed partly because she couldn’t afford to leave back then. But this time, she decided to ask him to leave the house. When she explained that she was devastated by the threat and that it had been the final straw, he insisted he had only been "joking" and told her that if she couldn’t understand his sense of humor, there was "something seriously wrong" with her.
Research suggests that threats like these are not rare and should not be ignored. A study of 210 women who had protective orders against abusive partners found that explicit threats of harm or death were common and often occurred alongside other forms of abuse, violence, fear, and emotional distress. Such behavior can be part of coercive control, creating an ongoing sense of fear and potentially indicating broader risks faced by victims. The woman asked Reddit users whether she had interpreted the comment correctly, and the responses were overwhelmingly clear. u/Castal wrote, "It doesn't sound like you misinterpreted anything. People who are joking don't go all menacing and snarly." u/Mini6cakes added, "That was a threat. Not a joke at all." u/ChildhoodObjective83 agreed, "That's fully threatening and terrifying."
