United passengers faced an hour-long delay after learning their plane had no pilot — then one mid-air gesture from the cabin crew won them over
Flight delays can test anyone's patience, especially when you're already worried about missing a tight connection. But the right crew can make the journey better. Megan L. Baldino, an Instagram user, was on a United flight that was delayed because the plane didn't have a pilot, but what stood out to her wasn't the hour-long wait. She shared the experience under her handle @meganbaldino on September 4, 2026, and explained what the crew did to handle a stressful situation. How they approached it left her genuinely impressed.
The problem started when the passengers were already on the plane and learned they would have to get off because there was no pilot available. United eventually found a pilot named Brian, who had been out walking his dogs and made his way to the airport as quickly as he could. The unexpected delay lasted about an hour, but as the flight got moving, the crew had another challenge as 22 passengers were facing tight connections. Once they were in the air, flight attendant Kimbo made sure the passengers with tight connections were taken care of. Baldino said Kimbo prioritized the 22 travelers who needed to get off quickly, while the crew kept communicating with passengers throughout the flight instead of leaving them guessing about what was happening.

Baldino said that steady communication made a stressful delay feel much more manageable. As a PR executive who has worked for several global corporations, she admitted that the crew's approach was the kind of communication that makes a real difference when people are dealing with an unexpected problem. She applauded United for the way the pilot and flight attendants kept everyone updated throughout the flight, calling their communication a "10 out of 10." Rather than focusing only on the delay, Baldino said she appreciated seeing the crew communicate with passengers "human to human."

People who saw her video also shared their thoughts. She even got a response from someone who revealed that Kimbo was her brother. "He absolutely loves his job and is an amazing flight attendant," @omg_itstrysten wrote, adding that she was proud of him. @united also responded to Baldino's praise, writing, "We're so sorry about the delay, but we're here to communicate and say, 'thank you.'" Another viewer, @mommacolt, recalled, "I had the same experience recently on Southwest. Everyone complied and cheered. It was a faith in humanity moment."

United has gone out of its way to make similar flight delays better for passengers before as well. In another story, a United flight landed more than an hour late, leaving several passengers with only minutes to catch connecting flights. The flight attendant called out the passengers who needed to hurry and asked them to press their call buttons so the crew and other travelers could identify them, helping those passengers get off the plane quickly.
