Widowed mom was sharing a playful moment with her 5-year-old daughter at Publix — a stranger's passing remark brought her to tears hours later
Being a parent can feel like a thankless job, especially when you carry the responsibilities on your own. Santana Marie, who posts on Instagram as @santanatown, was spending time with her 5-year-old daughter at a Publix grocery store when a stranger said something she couldn't stop thinking about. In a video she posted on October 20, 2026, Santana said the man's words hit her so deeply that she cried hours later.
Santana said she and her daughter had grabbed subs and sat down to eat in the store's dining area. After checking that the space felt safe, she settled in and started playing a silly game with her little girl, taking turns trying to read each other's lips without making a sound. They were laughing and enjoying their time together when a man nearby got up to throw away his trash. As he passed, he casually told Santana, "You are such a good mother," then walked away without even stopping to look at her. The brief comment caught her completely off guard. She hadn't even seen the man's face, but his words stayed with her long after he left. Santana went about the rest of her day, running errands and taking care of everything she needed to do. But when she finally lay down that night, around 9:30 p.m., the stranger's words came rushing back, and she burst into tears.

The man had no idea she was a widow raising her daughter on her own or how much she carried on her shoulders. Yet he'd noticed her in a moment when her parenting efforts were invisible; she was simply enjoying time with her child. What made the compliment so emotional was that it came when Santana was just being herself. She wasn't posting their moment online or trying to impress other parents at school or gymnastics. She was simply a mom laughing and playing with her little girl. And that stranger had seen something worth recognizing.

As Santana explained, she couldn't remember the last time someone had told her she was doing a good job as a mother. The stranger's small comment made her feel seen in a role that means everything to her. Santana's story resonated with other moms, who rushed to remind her that she deserved to hear those words. Instagram user @im.adrianag commented, "Awhh, but you are, friend; you’re such a good mama.” @siimrang called her "such a phenomenal mama," while @lori_mcburney1 wrote, "Aw… I love this for you, Santana, and you truly are an amazing mom!!"

Hearing words of acknowledgement from someone can mean a lot to mothers, as they are secretly juggling a lot of tasks together. In another similar incident, Facebook user Sharon noticed an exhausted mother struggling to manage her crying baby and fussy toddler during a grocery trip. Wanting to remind her that she was doing a good job, Sharon approached the stranger and handed her a gold star, telling her, "You are doing a really good job." The mother was so moved that she burst into tears and hugged Sharon. Sharon explained that she carries gold stars to encourage people because even small acts of kindness can help someone feel seen during a difficult time.
