Woman noticed an exhausted mom struggling to manage her kids during a grocery run—then handed her something that made her sob
Small acts of kindness can sometimes leave the deepest emotional impact on strangers. A woman and Facebook user named Sharon (@sharon.a.life) recently shared a touching moment that completely changed how she looks at everyday struggles. In a Facebook video shared on May 6, 2026, she explained how she noticed a visibly exhausted mother trying to manage a crying baby and a complaining toddler while shopping alone. She immediately knew she had to turn her day around with the most special gesture. She walked up to the stranger, and what happened next left both women emotional.
In the middle of the grocery store run, she noticed the exhausted mom with her kids and quickly approached her. She gently brushed her shoulder against the mom's and extended her hand. "I have something for you," she told the woman. Sharon handed the tired mother a gold star. At first, the mother looked confused and asked what it meant. Sharon then gently told the mother how she understands being a mom is hard and added, “You are doing a really good job.” The shopper broke down in tears and immediately hugged her. The duo spent a few moments, crying in the middle of the store, soaking in the kindness offered in that moment. Sharon again assured the mom that she had "earned" that little star because she was a great mom.
Sharon explained that though the stars looked ordinary, they held special meaning for her. When she was dealing with depression two years ago, doing even the littlest thing felt like an accomplishment and would be celebrated with a gold star. Ever since, she and her sister realized the importance of acknowledging even the simple tasks, because there are silent battles behind every effort and ordinary moment, too. Since then, Sharon has continued carrying gold stars in her pocket, giving them to strangers, friends, and loved ones whenever she feels someone may need encouragement. In that moment, despite being a stranger who knew nothing about the mom's life, she made her feel seen and appreciated. She mentioned how she had previously also given the stars to 200 moms at a conference because "living is hard and you're doing it while keeping little humans alive."
Sharon now encourages people to show more compassion toward strangers because many people are fighting personal battles quietly. She believes simple gestures can sometimes comfort someone more than expected. Sharon also said the gold stars are not really about rewards, but about reminding people they are stronger than they think during difficult moments. At the end of her video, she encouraged viewers to “keep going” and reminded them they are often doing much better than they believe. Sometimes, all a person needs is for someone to acknowledge their efforts, and you can do that through something as simple as a smile or a kind word.
