Woman befriended a lonely old man on her daily train — then one question about their age made her drive to work

She thought a daily train friendship was harmless until the passenger began treating a casual chat like something much more serious.

Making small talk with strangers while commuting seems like a kind gesture until it is perceived differently. One woman, Steph Danelle, who also goes by @stephdanelle on TikTok, shared one such bizarre incident on May 3, 2026. She explained how she befriended an elderly man on the train. However, as they journeyed together day after day, she started noticing something worrisome about his behavior. He ultimately asked her one question that made her drive to work instead.

@stephdanelle Don’t come for me I felt bad for him at first and thought he was just lonely. I need to stop talking to strangers 😩 #commutinglife #storytimes ♬ Suspense, horror, piano and music box - takaya

Danelle viewed the conversations as nothing more than a friendly chat between train passengers until one day, the man mentioned that his pals kept asking about the "mystery woman" he was always talking about, leaving her wondering whether he meant someone else. He even brought up White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, whose husband is more than 30 years older than she is, according to PEOPLE, and spoke admiringly about their relationship. Even then, she brushed it off. The real shock came after one ride when he inquired whether she was a traditional dater. Elaborating further, he explained that he wanted to know if their age gap would be an issue. He followed up by questioning the connection they shared. The commuter immediately clarified that they were just friends and nothing more.

In retrospect, many uncomfortable encounters are accompanied by a second wave of realization. Danelle recalled how he was insistent on sitting with her and talking to her during every ride after a certain point. There was also a time he proudly told her he had argued with another passenger just so he could save a seat for her. Then there were his dinner invitations, which she didn't think much of because the man was around the same age as her father and seemed like a lonely, empty-nester looking for company. Looking back, those moments felt very different from how they seemed at the time. She decided to stop taking the train and started driving to work instead.

Turns out this is no isolated case. In fact, decades of research have documented a consistent tendency for men to prefer younger female partners. A widely cited study by Finnish researcher Jan Antfolk and colleagues, published in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences, found that males of all ages reported the strongest attraction to women in their twenties. The pattern also appears in real-world behavior. Research by physicist Haluk O. Bingol analyzing tens of thousands of online dating profiles found that men were significantly more likely to pursue younger females, while the latter generally favored somewhat older partners, suggesting the trend extends beyond survey responses and into actual dating choices. A shared conversation does not always create a shared understanding. It's always better to ensure intentions and thoughts are communicated in situations like these to avoid unexpected and concerning misunderstandings.
