Woman called a flight attendant after finding an unclaimed bag under her seat—what the man next to her said moments later set her off
Safety and security are crucial while traveling, and that’s why passengers are cautious about their arrangements and their belongings. A Threads user, Mel Pots, shared how she had just boarded a flight with her daughter when she noticed an unclaimed bag lying underneath her seat. Confused, she decided to call the flight attendant. Posting the story under her handle, @emmemmpotts, on June 26, 2026, she revealed that a minute later, the man sitting in the aisle seat made one remark about the bag, which left her fuming.
It's natural for an unclaimed bag to raise concern, especially when it's under your seat. The mom mentioned that her daughter had the window seat, while she was in the middle seat. Just when she went to put her bag underneath, she saw another one was already there. Initially, she thought it was left by a previous traveler. She quickly called the flight attendant. Before the attendant could arrive, she decided on a whim to ask the man in the aisle seat if he knew anything about the bag. “Guess what? It was his bag. He wanted to have the leg room,” she explained.
The entire time that she pulled out the bag, looked at it, and wondered who it belonged to, the man said nothing. He was engrossed in his phone. Even when she pressed the call button for the flight attendant, he didn’t speak up. It was only after she got his attention that he casually mentioned he had kept the bag there for his own convenience. “No apology, just, ‘Oh yeah, that’s mine,’” she recalled. It left many wondering why he simply couldn’t use the overhead bin or keep the bag in his own space, and why he thought it was acceptable to take up someone else's space without even asking.
Commenters were equally enraged. @julesbf wrote, “That is personal space unless otherwise offered by the seat holder.” @reedristvedt added, “If you had opened it up, I know you would have had his full attention.” @giovannirib35 remarked, “It’s wild what some people do on planes.” If someone needs something, especially at the expense of another person's comfort, it is only courteous to ask first. However, some people act as though they are entitled to do what they please. In another incident, a young traveler at a Tokyo airport acted aggressively after cutting in line. When another passenger asked him to go to the back, he became confrontational.
His behavior prompted another traveler to intervene, but without success. As they waited for an official to defuse the situation, the young man showed no remorse. When the official arrived, she heard both sides of the story. Ultimately, nearly 10 flyers backed up the other two passengers and confirmed that the young man had been causing trouble. Without further ado, the official asked him to leave and take another flight. It costs nothing to be respectful and follow basic etiquette, but sometimes, arrogance and entitlement can prove costly.
