The popular saying “Love is blind” is true in certain cases. Partners can become so fixated on the idea of love that they overlook obvious red flags that could end a relationship. One woman who goes by u/Proper-Ice-1162 shared a post on Reddit on Monday, October 12, 2026, recalling how her friend witnessed something similar. The two friends were discussing rom-coms, and the woman casually suggested watching “Peter and Vandy,” a 2009 movie featuring Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler. However, after watching it, something pushed the friend to break up with her partner.

According to the woman, the movie portrayed "relationships in an interesting light." The friend took the recommendation. However, when they hung out the next time, she told the Reddit user that “she realized that she related to the female character in the scenes where the male character was being especially emotionally abusive.” The scenes spoke to her, and she found herself hoping the actor would walk away from the toxicity. It didn’t take long for her to figure out that she wanted the character to leave so badly because she saw herself in the female lead. Watching the situation from an outside perspective helped her realize what she needed to do, and she chose to end the relationship.

According to IMDb, the film features two lovebirds who begin the relationship with romance and roses. However, halfway through, manipulation and other troubling dynamics start to emerge. The extent of the damage becomes clear only later when much harm has already been done. The woman noted that she was happy her friend saw things through a clear lens and made the best decision for herself. However, she also admitted that suggesting the movie was a manipulative move on her part because she wanted her friend to break up with the toxic man.

Readers were glad that the woman got out of an abusive relationship before it left a permanent scar. u/Grevious-Bodily-Harm said, “You did your friend a solid favour.” u/Common_Squirrel_8775 added, “So, you saved her. Good to hear that.” u/Fit-Programmer-6162 remarked, “You led the horse to the water, and the horse chose to drink. She was in a place to see the reality and come up with conclusions all on her own.”

Sometimes, we need a fresh perspective to see the whole picture. Another woman gained this clear view through AI. The woman had borrowed her boyfriend’s laptop and saw an open tab with a ChatGPT conversation titled “Relationship Issues and Uncertainty.” As she read further, she learned that the man was having doubts about being with her. He didn’t even know if he was in love with her and pointed out details that felt unflattering. These were things he had never told her, and she had never noticed any issues before. When she confronted him about the chat, he was apologetic but still unsure. They tried to work things out over the next few months. However, they ultimately decided to call it quits.
