Woman expected male OBGYN to lecture her on motherhood over IUD replacement — his response was unlike anything she’d heard in 23 years
Women have far too many experiences with male doctors that haven’t ended well. However, some professionals are offering fresh hope. A 39-year-old woman who goes by u/Successful_Giraffe88 on Reddit shared her story that ended unexpectedly. In her post dated October 1, 2026, she braced herself to witness the worst after learning that a male OBGYN would be attending her. She fully expected him to lecture her about motherhood when she considered getting her IUD replaced. To her surprise, what he said instead made it one of the best visits ever.
After having a healthy discussion, the doctor, who seemed to be in his early 70s, moved to the Pap smear and asked if she wanted her IUD replaced. Since it was due time, she agreed. “He is the only doctor who has never tried to convince me otherwise,” the woman said. She was shocked that he didn’t give her a stare, make any passive-aggressive remark, or try to convince her to change her mind. Instead, he gave her an understanding smile, did his job, and proceeded to explain that she needed to eat well while taking the medication he would be prescribing. “I have never been so calm, comfortable, and personally supported by an OBGYN, and I've seen 9 in 23 years,” she shared.
Over the previous years, many professionals made ruthless remarks about her health, some of which even made her feel guilty. They’d say things like, “Motherhood is the best gift I've ever been given,” “I don't want you to say no to anything you might regret for the rest of your life," and “Children are God's gift to you and the world." And after 23 years, here was a man who was not mansplaining, guilt-tripping, or boasting, but simply respecting his patient’s needs. “Just know that we are still supported out there. I'm going to be more optimistic for a while after that unexpectedly pleasant encounter,” the woman said.
The feeling was undoubtedly refreshing, considering how many women dread such appointments because of unprofessional and personal biases from doctors. According to Wiley and Sons, 46.4% of patients reported having anxiety ahead of their visits. Around 25% said they had negative experiences, mainly because their concerns were dismissed or minimized. For this woman, however, everything leading up to the appointment should have given her a hint that the OBGYN was a brilliant one.
When she walked in, she was first handed a lengthy questionnaire. There were questions like, "Have you felt worthless in the past 2 weeks? "Have you had a difficult time focusing in the past 2 weeks?” "Have you had suicidal ideation within the past 2 weeks?" As she filled them out, she realized they were actually designed to better understand women’s mental health and other factors postpartum or while undergoing other bodily changes. Later, when the doctor came into the room, he honestly told her he was shocked by her responses. She confessed that she had recently lost her best friend and hadn’t been herself for a while. Through it all, he listened patiently, without rushing her or sticking to the only physical concern she came in for. Thanking the OBGYN, she wrote, "I wish more men and women like you existed in this day and age."
