Woman felt unsafe on a date and asked a stranger at the bar to grab her coat as she escaped — his response exceeded all expectations
Sometimes, a gut feeling may signal a red flag, and it should be your cue to act immediately. Threads user Megan Brennan (@hawkeyeprincess78) met up with an old date 10 months after he had ghosted her. When he asked her out for a drink, she began feeling uneasy. She quickly asked a stranger to get her coat as she escaped, but his response exceeded all of her expectations. Sharing the eerie story with her Threads followers on Friday, April 17, 2026, the woman revealed how his one response changed everything about the situation.
While talking to her ex, even as he apologized for ghosting her, Brennan did not feel comfortable being around him. After sensing something suspicious, she excused herself to use the restroom and briskly walked toward a man who was with his friends. She asked him to grab her coat and follow her, as she did not feel safe around her ex. Without hesitation, the man asked if the scarf was hers too, then followed her outside. Before she left for her car, he made sure she was okay. "He watched me walk to my car and asked if I was going to be OK, and I said yes, thanks to you. Be that guy," she wrote.
According to a study published on ResearchGate, women are often quick to assess social cues around them. The study noted, "Women, greater dangerous world beliefs predicted greater accuracy in discriminating real and fake smiles; no relationship was observed between dangerous world beliefs and smile detection accuracy for men." After her date returned following 10 months of ghosting her, Brennan sensed something was wrong with the energy he gave off. Instead of dismissing her feelings, she decided to trust her gut and seek help, and luckily, the kind stranger's quick thinking helped her leave what felt like an unsafe situation.
The Threads user's post received a lot of comments from internet users who shared their thoughts on it. @snegosnegosnego recalled a time when they were approached by a woman while walking down a dark alley. She said she was being followed by someone. They soon pretended to be her boyfriend and walked her to her car. "(I) checked to see that the guy hadn't followed us, and she thanked me, got in, and drove away," he wrote.
@twistingmom added, "Went to see some friends doing standup at a local dive bar—at the end of the night, two of the men walked outside with the women to make sure we got to our cars safely." @gogosoul63 recounted, "I'm a 63-year-old shaven-headed, tattooed man. You can always count on the old guys, for the most part. Aging rockers and punks." @absolute_adorable_walnut noted, "I really appreciate people, and especially men, like this."
