Woman has bold response after boyfriend told her to change her looks completely for his 'traditional' family

One of the most wholesome things about love is accepting one’s partner the way they are. One shouldn’t have to deny who they are and take on a different personality just to fit in under the bracket of love. A woman named Kelly (@boradwaybabyto) shared a post on X revealing that when her boyfriend asked her to change her appearance so she could please his family, she didn’t hold back from standing up for herself. She pointed out that despite seeing potential in the relationship, she had a savage response to make it clear that she wouldn’t change to fit in. 

Kelly noted that her partner was kind and respectful and that the relationship was going well. The duo finally decided to meet his parents and he thought it best to discuss it with his partner. In a thread, she recalled him saying, “They were traditional and I would need to make some changes.” The woman was open to considering what he had to say but his request turned out to be unbelievable. She assumed “he would tell me to tone down my swearing or consider hiding the fact that I was vegan” and noted that she would understand if such was the case. However, his “list” shocked her. 

“He proceeded to give me a long list of how I wasn’t enough of a ‘traditional woman,’” Kelly mentioned. The man went on to call out her looks and appearance and asked her to change it based on his family’s preferences. Starting with her “bright red hair,” she was asked to “tone it down,” despite being a gingerhead, as the family “preferred brunettes.” In a series of threads, she listed the long and unacceptable standards the man put before her. “My hands? They needed to be manicured. Tasteful though—no bright colours. Not too long but make them look ‘feminine,’" were the instructions along with forcing her to get her “eyebrows and a pedicure done."

In another thread, the woman revealed how, despite having told her partner her discomfort with makeup, he forced her to wear that too. “Tasteful colors only. He offered to send me some YouTube tutorials that would teach me the looks ‘they’ liked,” she recounted. Even clothes, shoes and everything came with a set of instructions, completely sidelining the woman’s personality to match the stereotypical and delusional idea the family had of an ideal girl. “This went on and on and on. He wanted to change me,” she noted. After the realization hit, she decided how she would respond. In a thread, she wrote, “The only thing that I changed was my relationship status.”

“I immediately broke up with him and informed him that he should find someone who meets his exacting standards—not force them on someone who has her own,” Kelly added. The woman watched his distasteful personality unfold as he forced her to agree but she stood her ground and refused and ultimately cut off ties with the man. Several people applauded the woman for her confident response. @livlost980 said, “They always want us to change.
