Woman ignored a stranger at her window pointing at her rental car’s rear tire — minutes later, another man made the scene feel more sinister
A stranger pointing at a car tire can make any driver wonder if something is wrong. For a Southern California realtor, Sydney Chemello, that simple warning became part of a frightening encounter at a gas station in Perris. The content creator was heading to an appointment after a small collision the previous week. She was driving a rental Jeep Wrangler, which was unfamiliar to her. On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Chemello shared the experience in an Instagram video under her handle @soldbuysyd, explaining how the rental car may have protected her during the encounter.
After getting into the Jeep, Chemello saw a man banging on her passenger window and pointing toward the rear tire. She knew there was no issue, so she refused to lower the window or step outside. Looking back, she said the rental car may have saved her because she did not feel the same need to inspect it. "I didn't care because I'm in a rental car," she explained, adding that she might have checked the tire if she had been driving her Lexus. The man kept pointing and asking her to open the window before suddenly speeding away. Shortly after, another man approached her vehicle, and she realized she may have been part of an abduction situation.
The second man presented himself as someone trying to help and asked whether Chemello and her car were okay. He also tried to get her to lower the window, but she refused and stayed inside. Chemello later said the Jeep's unfamiliar controls also helped because she could not immediately figure out how to lower the passenger-side window. In her view, staying inside prevented the situation from moving further and gave her the chance to leave safely.
Chemello said the encounter changed how closely she would pay attention to her surroundings in the future. She described the sequence as a possible "good guy, bad guy scheme" and called it a common abduction and trafficking technique. She shared the story to warn others after realizing how quickly the situation had developed. The experience also made her rethink how she responds when strangers point out an apparent problem with her vehicle. Her final message was blunt and focused on awareness: "Be careful."
