Woman opened her mother-in-law’s audiobook library expecting a few romance novels — what she discovered made her wish she hadn’t looked
Sometimes, you get to know so much about someone that you wish you knew a little less. A Reddit user who goes by u/KingKepa experienced exactly that after borrowing her mother-in-law's audiobook account. In a post shared on July 15, 2026, she revealed how a simple search for her next listen turned into a hilarious discovery she couldn't unsee. The woman expected to find romance and other novels on there, but what she found instead left her in disbelief.
The woman explained that the offer actually came months earlier during a road trip with her husband and his parents. They were discussing audiobooks when her mother-in-law offered to share her audiobook account on Mr. Bezos, saying she had been a member for years and had built up an extensive library. She completely forgot about it until she recently ran out of Spotify audiobook hours and couldn't find the book she wanted. After getting the login details and browsing her in-law's collection, she expected to find a few romance novels. Instead, she discovered dozens of dark romance titles — the kind of books, she joked, where "the first thing everyone says is, 'Please read the trigger warnings.'"
Instead of judging her mother-in-law, she admitted that she was actually impressed. She also mentioned that many of the books had been sitting on her own reading list for years, and she even joked that the woman had "great taste." The discovery changed the way she perceived her husband's mom. "I can't unsee it," she wrote. "Every time I look at her now, I'm just thinking, 'Ma'am... you read that?'" she admitted. She turned to Reddit to share the story as she was sure that her spouse would not want to hear about his mother's reading habits.
The post had fellow readers laughing in the comments, with some sharing that they had similar relationships with their own mothers-in-law. "My MIL and I share books," wrote @grandestrully_chloe. Another user, @jessmwhite1993, revealed, "I try to get my MIL to read all the filth with me! She loves that stuff." Replying to that comment, the woman said those were the exact words she had texted her MIL after stumbling across her collection. In-laws can be quite thrilling, and come with their own surprises. Unfortunately, not all of them are the best.
In another instance, a daughter-in-law mentioned how her husband's mom seemed extremely frugal with her reusing and recycling habits. This perspective changed when she saw the latter in the garage, wearing gloves, and going through their garbage. When confronted, the MIL claimed she was creating a "financial intervention report," so her son could see how his wife was simply wasting things and draining his future. The "waste" in question were leftovers, vegetable scraps, socks with tiny holes, and other items she had no business snooping around. Having had enough of her "frugality," she called out her behavior and banned her from entering their home.
