First dates are meant to be fun and possibly adventurous. However, safety should always be a priority, especially since the other person is mostly unknown. A Reddit user who goes by u/Flashy-Sprinkles-218 was asked out by a stranger who offered her a coffee on their way to their date. When she took a sip, she noticed there was no sugar and pretended to have her drink for the rest of the drive. She soon realized that her sweet tooth may have saved her life. Sharing on May 20, 2026, she revealed how the eerie flow of events made her fear the worst, ultimately feeling grateful that she didn't finish the beverage.

The woman recalled chancing upon the stranger at work when he asked her out. He picked her up from her place and had already gotten her a coffee, but she immediately stopped drinking it after one sip when she realized it had no sugar. "I have a huge sweet tooth," she remarked, adding that she only pretended to drink for the rest of the drive. After a while, the man persistently kept asking whether she had finished her cup. It prompted her to wonder why he had even gotten her the beverage since the plan was to meet for a coffee in the first place. That's when her spidey senses kicked in. The rest of the drive kept getting more and more concerning until she called up a friend and asked her to get her out of the mess.

Her gut feeling wasn't wrong. At first, the man drove past the place they planned to go to. When she asked, he noted that he wanted to visit another spot. However, he kept driving until he reached a dark, secluded, and unknown location. It was when he stepped out that she took her chance and called her friend, before abruptly ending the date. According to data from the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Research, 46% of women globally reported feeling unsafe while walking in their neighborhood at night. In America, 64% of females are not confident about being outdoors alone. This is due to the rising (4%) violence against women since 2019.

Though the woman didn't think her date would do anything untoward, her intuition and observation suggested otherwise. "To this day, I still wonder if not liking that coffee is what saved me," she wrote. Users were certain the man had worrisome intentions. u/retirednightshift wrote, "That was frightening. I'm glad you made it back to safety." u/Global-Barracuda7759 commented, "I think you're right, he definitely was expecting you to pass out or fall asleep or something, and you foiled his plan." u/Global-Barracuda7759 added, "Never get in a car with somebody you don't know, but it was smart of you to text your friend."
