Woman promised to help friend financially before her husband lost his job — then a demand over her $200K savings ended their friendship
Financial promises can look very different when circumstances change. A woman learned this after she and her husband offered to potentially sponsor a close friend who planned to move from Italy to Texas with her son for college. At the time, her spouse had a well-paying job, and the friend expected her boyfriend to handle her expenses. Later, the relationship ended, and the husband lost his job. In a post on Reddit on Friday, September 11, 2026, through her account, u/Secret_Notice_593, she explained how her buddy refused to take no for an answer even after learning of their changed financial standing. When she later brought up their $200k in savings and made a demand, the disagreement eventually ended the friendship.
The friend asked the couple to cover her living costs from January through August. The request included about $4,800 in rent alone. The woman explained that they could no longer afford this. She reminded her friend that the original arrangement depended on different circumstances and financial support from her boyfriend. She even offered a few hundred dollars, but the person was insistent, stating that she built her plans solely on their word. The wife shared that her buddy suddenly brought up the $200k she knew she had, and suggested that shelling out $5,000 from there should be no problem at all. She tried explaining that the savings were not spare cash. Around $100,000 had come from her own work and was meant for buying a house, while the rest came from her parents and the sale of her former house in Italy. "It's not disposable cash," she remarked.
After being pestered to still pay, the woman realized that her friend had no consideration for her situation or boundaries. Ultimately, she chose to end the friendship. Respecting the other person's financial boundaries is crucial, no matter how close or personal the relationship is. While the woman understood that her friend also wanted to escape an abusive situation involving her father, she could not go beyond what was possible for her. She "wished her the best" and blocked her former friend everywhere.
